I'm a seasoned founder, serial entrepreneur, and executive in the deep tech space. My technical expertise mainly lies in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and intelligent mobile robotics with dozens of real world application projects under my belt, some of which turned into very successful products. I'm also a published author with over 40 publications in those areas, including several best paper award winners. However, I consider myself a polymath and a problem solver.I’m currently a co-founder and the CTO of Atlas Robotics, revolutionizing the material handling industry. Previously, as the former CTO and co-founder of Locomation, I was at the forefront of automated driving technologies for the ground transportation industry, spearheading the development of safe and reliable autonomous trucks.Prior to launching Locomation, I honed my skills as a Senior Robotics Engineer and Special Faculty/Commercialization Specialist at the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) of the Robotics Institute (RI) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), contributing to many high profile projects including the development and deployment of an autonomous Sikorsky helicopter, an autonomous Caterpillar mining truck, an on-road autonomous Prius, a high-speed off-road autonomous military vehicle, an autonomous mapping and driver assist system for snowplow trucks, and the semi-autonomous search and rescue robot CHIMP that won the third place in the DARPA Robotics Challenge. I hold a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Boğaziçi University, an MS degree in Computer Science from The University of Texas at Austin, and a BS degree in Computer Engineering from Marmara University in Turkey. I also completed postdocs at RI and HCII at CMU, leading the development of intuitive and expressive interfaces for autonomous robotic systems designed to assist the elderly and disabled. My passion for innovation extends beyond the boardroom, as I've been at the forefront of groundbreaking research, development, and leadership within various teams and research groups, including Cerberus and UT Austin Villa RoboCup teams, Team Cappadocia, the fourth place winner in the Multi Autonomous Ground-robotic International Challenge (MAGIC) 2010 competition, and the UT Austin DARPA Urban Challenge team, leaving indelible marks on the autonomous mobile robot and self-driving vehicle revolutions.Feel free to explore my website at http://tekin.mericli.com to learn more about my journey. Co-Founder & Chief Technology OfficerLocomation Aug 2018 - May 2023Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, UsLocomation’s strategy is to incrementally deliver on the promise of autonomous trucking through a practical approach that combines our advanced autonomy technology with the human’s superior cognitive ability of identifying and responding to complex driving situations, interactions, and edge cases. As the co-founder and CTO, I;* laid out the overall technology vision, * crafted the roadmap for autonomous driving technology development activities with a progression from Human-Guided Autonomous Convoys to L4 fully autonomous trucks,* led and oversaw the development activities for our backend products to create plans and schedules for optimal load pairings, asset assignments, and routes for maximum asset utilization, minimum carbon emissions, and maximum driver satisfaction in Human-Guided Autonomy applications, * supervised the overall systems, safety, and human-factors engineering as well as product design efforts, * represented the company in various events as keynote speaker and panelist.Locomation achieved many firsts in the industry:* Pioneered the Human-Guided Autonomy concept to be realized in the form of Autonomous Relay Convoy and Drone Follower products.* Developed the only approach to autonomous driving that is compliant with federal regulations. * Signed the first commercial contracts in the autonomous vehicle industry for the deployment of 3120 autonomous convoy units among our four customers. * Built its technology with lightning speed with the smallest team and the least amount of funding in the autonomous driving ecosystem.I believe Locomation’s approach and technology will be the first one to be safely deployed on public roads at commercially meaningful scale. -
Special Faculty / Commercialization SpecialistNational Robotics Engineering Center Oct 2017 - Aug 2018Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, UsI contributed to and led many high profile autonomous and assistive robotic system development projects, some examples of which are;* Motion and manipulation planning algorithms for the CHIMP robot, the 3rd place winner at the DARPA Robotics Challenge.* An operator assist system for snowplow vehicles by utilizing mapping and localization methods as well as augmented reality technologies for the human-machine interface. This project was sponsored by the FHWA. * An autonomous co-pilot system for rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft in collaboration with Sikorsky as part of the DARPA ALIAS program.* An autonomous passenger vehicle as part of an internal R&D program.* An autonomous drone based roof-top inspection system for the insurance sector.* Autonomous mining and haulage trucks in collaboration with Caterpillar. * Automated process monitoring and improvement systems for the steel industry. -

Postdoctoral FellowCarnegie Mellon University Nov 2013 - May 2015Pittsburgh, Pa, UsAt the Human-Computer Interaction Institute, I led the efforts on building intuitive and expressive interfaces to interact with semi-autonomous robotic systems that are intended to assist elderly and disabled. Prior to that, I was affiliated with the Robotics Institute, leading the Assistive Dexterous Arm (ADA) project at the Personal Robotics Lab, and working on the CHIMP robot for the DARPA Robotics Challenge at the National Robotics Engineering Center. -
Ph.D.Bogazici University Sep 2007 - Jun 2014Istanbul, TrMy thesis contributes an experience-based mobile manipulation approach that leads to fast, robust, reliable prehensile and non-prehensile manipulation planning and execution in a robot, object, and environment independent manner. -
Visiting ScholarCarnegie Mellon University Jul 2011 - Jan 2012Pittsburgh, Pa, UsI worked towards the completion of my Ph.D. thesis under the supervision of Prof. Manuela Veloso. Additionally, I helped with the deployment and the analysis of the log files recorded during the deployment period of CoBot, the symbiotically autonomous service robot of Carnegie Mellon, to come up with various detailed statistics regarding coverage, human-robot interaction, and task execution success. During my visit, I also developed several smaller projects involving the extensive use of the Kinect RGBD sensor. -
Co-FounderI Bilişim Ltd. Şti. Nov 2007 - Jan 2011Istanbul, Tri Bilisim was founded in November 2007 to produce solutions in the fields of embedded systems, mobile robot platforms, control systems, and artificial intelligence, and offer consultancy services for research and development projects in those areas. We believe that the next stage of the rapidly developing computer technology is "intelligent mobile robots" that will be a part of our everyday life.We started walking on this path with our crew composed of people who have over 10 years experience in artificial intelligence, robotics, and software development to provide hardware and software infrastructure services for the firms that would like to invest in and run production facilities, and researchers who would like to develop new technologies in this field.
