Five years of coordinating the online presence of technology startups in Waterloo and Vancouver before zagging into human-focused, person-centred socialWORK.The year is 2009. Twitter is brand new and gaining traction. Facebook has been taking the world by storm for a few years. Companies want to hire people who understand social media, attention, and marketing. I am a fresh-faced psychology undergraduate who reads a lot. I cut my teeth on corporate social media before diving headfirst into the world of technology startups at their buzzy height. For the next five years, I write blog posts, update social media accounts, and create communications strategies. I also measure and evaluate reach, impressions, and visits. Sometimes, I order furniture, arrange travel, and order lunch. Every day is different and I love it.I move across the country. Then, I move back. The next couple of years are...my lost years. I emerge sober and knowing that I cannot return to startups. After all, I didn't go to school for psychology to work in tech startups. In time, it becomes clear that I went to school for psychology so that I could go back to school for social work. At the tender age of 31, I return to university and complete a Bachelor of Social Work. Sidenote: I highly recommend going back to school as a "mature" student. I was so much smarter, more organized, and I applied for so many more scholarships (and got them). In May 2020, right when the global pandemic was starting, I was hired as a volunteer program coordinator. I completed a certificate in volunteer management and began re-imagining a volunteer program that had only ever been in-person. I created a strategy and a framework for a virtual volunteer program, including online interviews, training, and a paperless filing and documentation system. Today, I manage over 200 volunteers each year in our hybrid delivery volunteer program. It is equal parts science and art. Every day is different and I love it.Social work is the umbrella I need to be under. The future is unknown, but I continue to pursue my interests in housing security, public policy, counseling, and group social work. The possibilities are boundless.
