Marine and aquatic ecosystem consultancy

I've been involved in several EU and national funded projects and services related to environmental impact assessment of human activities at sea: offshore renewable energy, maritime cables installation, aquaculture, port activity and tourism. My main duties have included research on social and environmental effects of offshore technologies (e.g. offshore renewables, aquaculture, antifouling coatings and paints), selection and implementation of best monitoring methodologies to follow and mitigate those effects and scientific coordination of the team.I've been also involvement in a number of services to offshore technology developers covering projects’ licensing, EIA development and environmental monitoring planning, management and execution.I've been working directly with clients, regulators and other stakeholders such as fishermen and other marine users.Examples of this experience are the coordination and participation in the EIAs and environmental monitoring activities of several national offshore renewable energy projects: WaveRoller from AWE installed at Peniche; WindFloat, from WindPlus, floating offshore wind installed in Aguçadoura testing turbine) and more recently also in Viana do Castelo (pre-comercial project of 25 MW).

Research on the role of saltmarsh vegetation in the adaptation to climate change in Portuguese systems: Minho and Tagus estuaries and Rias de Aveiro and Formosa.

Consultant on water quality management; participation in environmental impact assessment and studies of coastal and maritime works and infrastructures; implementation of national protected area management plans; development of water quality assessment studies for dam systems and watersheds.

Worked on the development of several ecological models as tools for marine systems ecological evaluation: heavy metal assimilation in shrimps, salt marsh vegetation growth and water-sediment nitrogen dynamics in estuaries. Have also worked on the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive in Portugal regarding the definition of coastal and estuary types along the Portuguese coast and selection of water quality elements for transitional water quality standards.Meanwhile I got my PhD on Environmental Engineering and gave some lectures on estuarine and coastal ecological processes on the BSc and MSc. of Environmental Engineering.
