As an Engineer I with the Mannik and Smith group, I am able to collaborate with professional engineers, surveyors, engineering interns, and clients to design and improve residential, commercial, and industrial sites throughout the Midwestern United States. I'm often communicating with clients throughout the design, permitting, and construction process to ensure we are meeting their vision. The design process involves research of the site, including soil reports, hydrological characteristics, and topographical data. Research also goes into federal, state, city, and township code requirements to ensure compliance. I work extensively in the AutoCAD Civil 3D program to prepare construction drawings and bid documents. Our team is also tasked with designing a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) of the site from pre- to post-construction. I assist once a month with MSG's geo-environmental group, water sampling to monitor pollutants and sediment discharge as a part of an NPDES permit.

Frontage Laboratories is a clinical research organization, contracted by clients to investigate life-saving pharmaceuticals. I worked in the quality control department, generating and reviewing data tables and statistics in the Provantis program. My position involved project management to ensure timely completion of data tables, subreports, and draft report text for the client. I also worked within a team to proofread and edit report input to ensure accuracy, compliance with GLPs, SOPs and, report style guidelines.

I am involved in research with Dr. Margaret Kalcic at The Ohio State University through the Great Lakes Clean Water Initiative. I am working under the same project that I previously worked under that concerns phosphorus and nitrogen removal from agricultural runoff in Northwest Ohio. Over the summer I was able to travel to the farms and collect water samples. I am now involved with the laboratory aspect of this project including filtering water samples and preforming tests for total suspended solids, pH, and nutrient content.

I was involved with research under Dr. Jay Martin working with the Master’s students of the Blueprint Project in Clintonville, Ohio. This project consisted of ecological-engineered storm water management techniques to reduce storm water overflow into the nearby Olentangy and Scioto Rivers. These techniques include rain gardens, pervious pavements, and retention ponds. Over the summer I was able to travel to the rain garden sites to collect water quality samples and help preform simulated storm assessments. I worked in the lab washing and acidifying bottles to prepare for field collection of the water samples. I was also involved with other tasks such as surveying sites, infiltration testing of the permeable pavement, and organizing files and pictures to measure the progression of the site vegetation growth. This project helped me gain more experience in the realm of water quality improvement using natural engineered systems.

I was involved in research with Dr. Larry Brown at The Ohio State University through the Great Lakes Clean Water Initiative. The objective of this research project was to remove nutrients from agricultural runoff in Putnam County, located in Northwest Ohio. We designed a two-stage structure that consisted of a bioreactor that terminated into a phosphate filter to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from runoff water. We collected water samples before and after the structure to better understand its nutrient removal efficiency. I'm passionate about improving water quality and working to keep nutrients in the soil where plants need them, reducing the use of fertilizers. This research has the potential to reduce the frequency and/or extent of algae blooms in Lake Erie.
