Working at The Last Pickle (acquired by DataStax in March 2020) has seen a return to my startup roots, this time in the new-to-me world of big data. I was brought in to spearhead the web application development for a product focusing on predictive maintenance for software infrastructure. The Last Pickle had no experience with this and needed someone they could completely trust to make all the right decisions while they focused on the rest of the product. I was approached while working at Optimal Workshop and the timing for me worked out.

The three years during my tenure at Optimal Workshop saw tremendous change in many areas, including my team growing from 2 to 11 people. Not rockstar growth by any means but still disruptive if not handled well. It was important that I develop my team’s culture positively while implementing minimal processes and rituals that enhanced our ability to deliver while we grew. I turned around complaints when I started of my team not achieving enough into half-hearted complaints of “please slow down”.I am especially proud of how we got work done at Optimal Workshop and this is the topic of a talk I’ve previously given. I had introduced a number of concepts and rituals that helped mitigate problems I’d experienced in previous roles before they become a problem for us. A key one of those is Monday Madness which is about spending 1 day a week focusing on small work for the business which would normally be delayed in favour of large multi-week project work. The intention is to address new features and not bugs or maintenance work so that our customers seeour product constantly improving, often quickly addressing feedback to their delight. Monday Madness was instrumental in turning around attitude towards my team’s work rate and gave confidence to the rest of the business that we would address all types of work, not just the large chunky projects.

As CTO at Ponoko I was the main technical contact with partner organisations (including AutoDesk and Local Motors) as they integrated with our systems. I wrote all the technical documentation and kept key stake holders up to date with project progress. Too often third party APIs are hard to use as the docs are obscure, missing or just plain wrong and the API itself isn't conducive to the workflow at hand. So I take particular pride in my design and documentation of Ponoko's API which was created with the end developer in mind.

As the co-founder of one startup, and through my involvement in subsequent startups, I have found that they require the ability to cope with significant stress and unexpected changes in priority while delivering sooner to market rather than later. My ability to excel in these situations is the key reason that I was brought in as the CTO at ProjectX; they were snowed under and needed someone to put out their fires, allowing them to regroup, take stock and then provide a better solution for their clients.
