Before I retired, I was a partner in the Worcester, Massachusetts law firm of Bowditch & Dewey. I practiced law in the areas of executive compensation, employee benefits and ERISA. I have worked with dozens of independent school leaders on their employment agreements and, if things start to go wrong, counsel them on dealing with problems in their relationship with their Board of Trustees. My goal as a lawyer was to help my clients solve problems. I understand the complex tax laws that govern deferred compensation, tuition remission, and other issues for school leaders. I can solve employee benefit plan compliance problems and have developed good relationships with the regulators at the IRS and DOL.Earlier in my working life I was, in no particular order, marketing director at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, owner of a fabulous store in Bridgton, Maine, Chinese linguist at a top-secret National Security Agency site (shh, don't tell anyone) while in the US Air Force, early employee at the Executive Office of Human Services of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, consultant to the AFL-CIO Office of Professional Employees, reporter for the Plymouth (NH) Record, co-founder of a residential drug treatment program supported by the City of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I was an assistant to the Washington State Secretary of State for Bicentennial events. So many jobs, so little time.
