Problem solving courts can trace their theoretical roots to innovations in policing strategies in the 1990s which inspired strategies in criminal justice system, helping give rise to innovations like community prosecution, community courts and problem solving probation. These ideas not only influenced community courts but other specialized courts. In these courts, social workers are vital in the court system, assessing individuals and making treatment recommendations to the court, using the power of the court to help people get their lives back on track.In this course, students will become familiar with the traditional court approach in a variety of cases, and how the presence of the social work professional in therapeutic courts results in case resolutions that are meaningful for the court, the community, and most importantly for the accused individual. Students will become familiar with legal terms and documents, issues that arise in the context of criminal courts.
