Graduate Research
After more than 7 years in planning and project management, I was given the opportunity to complete my Master's thesis. I spent four months planning, researching and writing my thesis that theorized if one-way or two-way street design promoted downtown livability and pedestrian safety. I found that through interviews and peer-reviewed literature that multi-lane one-ways in downtown streets, that are designed to move high volumes of traffic at higher speeds safely offering less congestion and fewer vehicular collisions, have deteriorated the living spaces next to them. This planning decision grossly neglected pedestrian-level living consideration by favoring car-centric street design. In the last twenty years, cities are converting (or exploring conversion) their multi-lane one-way downtown streets to be more welcoming to vistors (one ways are confusing to visitors), improve economic development (multi-lane one-ways are not conducive for retailers/small business access), and make downtowns safer because two-way street configurations reduce speeds and have fewer severe collisions (higher injury accidents on one-ways). In addition, the multi-lane one-way configuration requires longer distance to reach destinations increasing trip lengths leading to higher vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and cause driver tunnel vision, a phenomena that changes driver behavior to be focused on "beating the red lights". My research developed a scenario analysis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a city that has completed conversions of their downtown multi-lane one-ways into two-way streets as a comparison Lincoln, Nebraska and develop scenarios that could be correlated to Lincoln's downtown one-ways configuration. While time constraints limited my analysis, it was enlightening to visualize the contrast of pedestrian friendly design and automobile-first design. In summary, downtown street design must be pedestrian friendly to encourage a livable, walkable and vibrant downtown street life.
