Dr. Day currently is actively engaged in clinical multidisciplinary care for head and neck cancer patients and leads the multidisciplinary team at Head and Neck Specialists-Charleston. He volunteers as Chairman of the Board, Head and Neck Cancer Alliance, Inc. and is the National Director for Head and Neck Oncology for Sarah Cannon Cancer Center. His clinical leadership involves coordinating comprehensive head and neck care among surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, dentists, prosthodontists and speech pathologists.He received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma and residency at Louisiana State University followed by fellowship in head and neck oncologic surgery at the University of California, Davis and craniomaxillofacial surgery at Inselspital-Bern in Bern, Switzerland. Following fellowship, he joined the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee and is now Professor, Vice Chair and Director of the Division of Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, USA. He was recruited from Vanderbilt University Medical Center to start head and neck oncology in South Carolina. In 1999, he started the head and neck oncology program as Director of the Head and Neck Tumor Center at the NCI Designated Hollings Cancer Center at Medical University of South Carolina.Dr. Day served as President of the American Head and Neck Society and Council of the International Academy of Oral Oncology while having completed a four-year term on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He has served as a Senior Examiner with the American Board of Otolaryngology. He has also served on the National Cancer Institute’s Head and Neck Steering Committee, Head and Neck Surgical Subcommittee for RTOG and Head and Neck Working Group for ACS. Dr. Day volunteers his time as President of the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance, Inc. and as Treasurer of Charleston Moves and in 1998 started the inaugural international Oral and Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week (OHANCAW) in 1998. He limits his clinical practice to patients with tumors of the head and neck region, including robotic surgery, HPV oropharyngeal, advanced and recurrent skin cancers, melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and salivary gland tumors. He also is active in research in improving outcomes in cancer care for patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer.
