I am an associate lecturer in Forensic Science at UWE, Bristol, with experience of working in a forensic drugs analysis company. I face all tasks with a methodical and analytical approach, developed in these roles and undergraduate and postgraduate study at UWE. I lead the laboratory based forensic practical’s for UWE students in two modules (i) scientific investigation of crime (ii) and forensic analysis. Within the role, I instruct the students in technical matters, whilst working alongside skilled laboratory technicians. I deliver specialised forensic practical demonstrations, support students with fundamental scientific procedures and skills, help maintain obligatory laboratory protocols, oversee the use of equipment and materials, instruct the students how to use forensic analytical instrumentation (e.g. GC Pyrolysis, MSP, GRIM, VSC, FTIR, Polarising Light microscopes, as well as high/low Comparison Microscopes), and to liaise with laboratory technicians on the development and delivery of the practical sessions. I have been mentored by an experienced Forensic Scientist with 20+ years’ experience as a drugs analyst reporting in court on cases involving trace levels of drugs on banknotes and mobile phones. I got to sample the inner workings of a forensic laboratory, from the moment evidence arrived in the laboratory, to presenting the findings in court. I made up standards to be utilised for comparison purposes against drugs commonly found on bank notes. I participated in an authentic procedure, analysing £2000 in background money using the companies novel Mass Spectrometer. I got to utilise UCAS accredited software and complete relevant paperwork. I received demonstrations of the instrumentation used in laboratories for forensic cases. The first-hand experience was unsurpassable.

As chief administrator, I was responsible for formulating and implementing surveys to gather necessary feedback to apply for funding. I created two separate surveys and completed and collated the data collected within a two-week deadline. I presented the information in a professional manner so the manager was able to communicate the findings to the funders involved. The outcome from the surveys, alongside additional managerial materials and input, netted Windmill Hill City Farm approximately £324,000 in funding. Furthermore, I was involved in a Lottery Funded pilot project to recruit volunteers over the age of 50 to train others in the South Bristol area. The farm now has its first few volunteers.
