As a case manager, I have learned much regarding the needs of patients and how to fulfill those needs to the best of my ability. My job is weekend option which means I am the only case manager at the hospital, handling multiple patients and situations at a time. I also fill in for the others when they need time off for any reason. This means that flexibility and fast thinking are paramount to the job. Having been an LPN for thirty-three years, I have worked as a surgical assistant, office manager, floor nurse and more. With my background in Case Management, I hope to merge the two specialties of nursing and Emergency Management. With increased incidents of violence in hospitals and towards hospital personnel, it is imperative that changes be made. Training staff to recognize and respond needs to be mandatory. In the event of a major event, whether natural or man-made, there needs to be better plans for evacuation and management of patients. Managerial experience and development of skills is essential to my degree. I would like to possibly work on a corporate level in the near future to educate staff and personnel on how to handle situations such as the recent shooting at a Bronx hospital . It is my plan to use what new skills I learn in handling large scale disaster situations to better care for the people of my community. Floods, tornadoes and more have caused extensive damage and loss of homes and even lives. I feel that this is the time to get hospitals prepared for future disasters, plan for events and come up with evacuation routes and more.I performed my externship hours in the Adult Behavioral Unit, learning more regarding the indigent, homeless populations and resources available to them. I developed a discharge planning guide for the unit, along with a packet, which has been accepted for use.
