I have designed and peer reviewed over 400 GSHP systems for commercial, municipal, institutional and military facilities in the lower 48 states, Alaska and internationally, exceeding 12,500,000 ft² of conditioned space utilizing approximately 30,000 nominal tons of heat pump capacity. This excludes small residential homes from 1,000 to 3,000 ft², and large custom homes of 10,000 ft² to 50,000 ft². My largest single GHX design to date is for the 359,000 ft² IKEA retail store in Merriam, KS, utilizing a vertical closed loop comprised of 160 boreholes x 600’ depth, in operation since the fall of 2014. I have been increasingly involved in GSHP system forensics at different levels ranging from evaluation diagnostics to assist owners in the resolution of operational issues to litigation including expert witness work. I have been involved in the GSHP mechanical trades since 1992 after a career as a petroleum geologist since 1979. My involvement in the industry started as a co-owner of a GSHP wholesaler based in Billings, MT, and began training with experienced mechanical contractors and loop installers installing completed heat pump systems, from the ground loop through controls. I am a certified IGSHPA/NATE installation trainer, and one of fifteen individuals approved as a Certified GeoExchange Designer trainer by IGSHPA.
