I serve as the Chief Legal Advisor for Ada County Sheriff Matt Clifford. The Ada County Sheriff's Office is the largest local law enforcement agency in Idaho with over 850 deputies and civilian staff serving close to a half million citizens. As Chief Legal Advisor, I provide legal counsel to the Sheriff and Chief Deputy on legal issues concerning police services, jail operations, personnel, administrative, and civil rights law. I am excited about the mission and values of the ACSO and proud to work with my fellow deputies to make Ada County a great place to live, work, and play.Prior to working for the Ada County Sheriff, I was a Deputy City Attorney in Boise, Idaho. In that role, I spent 10 years providing legal advice to the Boise Police and Fire Departments and the Boise City Clerk. Additionally, I served as the Meridian Police Liaison from 2008 to 2016 and the Eagle City Police Liaison from 2014 to 2016. As deputy city attorney, I provided legal advice and training to police officers, reviewed public records requests and property dispositions; and regularly drafted resolutions and ordinances. I assisted officers with on-going criminal investigations, requests for arrest and search warrants, and provided legal advice for officers and commanders in the field. In that time, I also served as a criminal prosecutor on a wide range of criminal offenses and sat as first chair on more than 30 jury trials and handled hundreds of bench trials.In addition to my role with the Ada County Sheriff, I own Derden Consulting which is a consulting firm that provides training and policy advice to police departments of all sizes all over the United States. I am also the Legislative Counsel for the Idaho Sheriff's Association which assists all 44 county sheriff's in their lobbying efforts to keep Idaho safe and ensure its laws stay consistent with the constitutional ideals its citizens hold dear. I am lucky to live in Eagle, Idaho with my wife Nicole R. Derden (who owns and manages Derden Law). I graduated Bishop Kelly High School (98) and then attended Carroll College (2002). Nicole and I were married in the summer of 2002 and together we attended the University of Idaho, College of Law, graduating early in Dec 2004. Nicole and I have 4 active sons and enjoy our volunteer work with their schools, our parish, and all of the boy's sports.
