Terry is very much a disciple of the Peter Drucker school of management theory.'If you can't measure it you can't manage it" (An oft misquoted Drucker homily advocating understanding the nature, scale and challenges to opportunity, rather than muddling through) Terrys mantra is that everything flourishes through the genius of individual talents. He seeks to support people and projects that deliver wide benefit. His outlook stems from an education in economics and political philosophy at the London School of Economics and his real 'alma mater' Unilever PLC.Terry is particularly interested in helping people faced by challenging situations.Specialisms: Organisation change and development; Market dynamics; Financial management and challenges of small businesses; Motivational management; extracting the positive from the chaotic.

Founder TrusteeUgliduck Trust Apr 2020 - PresentWest Sussex,UkUgliduck is my flagship company. Its values reflect everything I have learned from nearly 50 years work in business and social enterprise on the challenges to successful outcomes. It is focussed on supporting individuals meet their aspirations. The name deliberately highlights my interest in helping people in businesses and charitable groups where there are challenges to their development. No one needs to 'get out of town', as the old Ugly Duck jingle goes. We all have to confront the challenges that limit our ability to meet our aspirations.

PartnerRds Consulting Jun 1981 - May 2017Haywards Heath, West SussexStarting RDS was the watershed moment in my career. Heidrich and Struggles had approached me to be Marketing Director Singer Corporation Europe in Brussels. Instead I decided to launch out on my own.Research, Develop, Sell are the key words which produce the acronym title of this consultancy. It sums up my experience in business and goes back to the early lessons that I learned in Unilever. The consultancy was my break from working as an employee into a more independent position. Since starting RDS I have worked with a range of blue chip consumer goods companies and developed business as far afield as Japan as well as investing in a manufacturing business which supplied accessories to companies like Marks and Spencer, JLP and Next in the UK. The manufacturing business failed ultimately but the experience taught me many lessons.

ChairmanTalbot House Charitable Trust Jan 2005 - Jan 2014Newcastle Upon TyneChair of Board of Trustees for a charitable Trust delivering both day school and care services to children with emotional and behavioural difficulties and to their families and carers.More recently a specialist Childrens Care Home has been built and added to its range of services for children with a wide range of difficulties that cause them to disassociate from what society would expect of young people. We ignore these children at a great cost and to label them as 'uncontrollable' suggests that the labeller makes an early visit to see what is achieved by the children and staff at Talbot House through a professional but truly child centred philosophy.I resigned from the Trustee board in February 2014 to seek a wider influence with those who either label, ignore or only purport to set policy that helps these children and young people.

Managing DirectorArthur Guinness Consumer Products Apr 1977 - Jun 1981NorthumberlandCorporately Guinness was all over the place at the time that I took on this Consumer Products challenge. Several others candidates had turned the job down as a bridge too far.I could only see the challenge at the time. It worked out well at first and I began to think I could walk on water. Things did not continue like that but this is the place that I learned some of my most valuable lessons at work.

Director General ManagerWilkinson Match Plc Jan 1972 - Jan 1977Joined Wilkinson as a marketing manager Terry quickly rose through the ranks to be appointed General Manager of the Italian subsidiary operating from Milan. This brought many benefits including learning his language of preference and Italian business and way of life.He was appointed Wilkinson's youngest ever subsidiary Board Director as Director and General Manager for its European Operations continuing to live in Milan - with responsibilities for factories in Spain, subsidiaries in Italy and France and distributorships through Colgate Palmolive France and Lever Brothers Greece. On returning to the UK he was appointed Director of Sales and Marketing for all Wilkinson Match products except matches. He left to take up another challenging position aftre turning down a soft option (in his view) on the Board of the Prestige Group of Companies.

Marketing ManagerUnilever Aug 1966 - Jun 1972After selection through probably the most competitive recruitment process for graduates of that time (Including Rorschach Tests: IQ: Psychological interview: team competition and interview by main board Directors) Terry joined the largest Unilever subsidiary as a trainee buyer, buying merchandise for West and East African operating companies. He soon earned a stint in one of those companies in Nigeria as a Sales Manager for some of the products he had been buying.Within 12 months he was promoted to branch management and had his first experience of full profit and people management responsibility. This coincided with the civil war in Nigeria but in spite of the Army requisitioning of transport and materials and the ethnic cleansing which terrorised staff he continued to make profits for the business though a combination of price adjustments and rationalization. He closed one of the two branch sites in Kaduna.Terry was pretty much forced to return to the UK by senior management who did not see career opportunity in West Africa. He very soon transferred to Van den Bergh and Jurgens were he gained his first business to business and business to consumer marketing experience as a marketing manager in the UK catering and bakery division and then as the responsible product manager for soft margarines at a time when butter was still the spreading substance of choice. He managed the brand with the highest UK advertising budget at that time and learned how much easier it was to work with a large budget rather than a small or tight budget. In 1972 he chose to be head hunted to Wilkinson Sword because he wanted to work overseas again and especially in mainland Europe.
