Profile bio

About Terry Chavis

As a Student Affairs professional, I am passionate about student development and learning and sharing this passion with students and colleagues. It is my personal philosophy that the holistic development of the student should occur through experiences in and out of the classroom, rich discussions, reflections, and the implementation of their actions. My experiences have broadened and deepened my knowledge of the importance of programmatic efforts and academic support of our students outside of the classroom. My efforts as a supervisor have been developmental to my understanding of how to build relationships with students and supporting them on their academic and social journey. I also believe that research is essential for the progression of student success. The process of research is one that I have always been delighted with experiencing. There are many ways to interpret and use data; it is versatile, yet resolute. Data can be used to validate a fact or disprove a statement, but a fact cannot render data, and statements cannot discard unwanted data. I seek to bridge the gap between assessment, evaluation, and research, and Student Affairs, specifically that of Housing. As a member of a racial Minority group, I have dedicated myself to understanding how Minority students persist in college. I seek to explore the barriers and challenges that a Minority student may face while attending college and how theoretical applications can be applied by practitioners to help these students persist. It is my goal to offer my diverse experiences and passions to the betterment of Student and Academic Affairs. I understand that I have valuable skills that can encourage the critical thinking of students and professionals alike. I hope to one day be able to motivate a large population, including students and professionals, to always strive to gain knowledge and apply their knowledge to their intellectual and ethical development

Listed skills include Residence Life, Public Speaking, Student Affairs, Higher Education, and 32 others.
