As an IT manager for Service Desk, desktop support, and data center support, I’ve been able to keep my “customers” happy even as my teams and I fix the IT “things” that have gone wrong in their business lives. I’m now in search of my next IT challenges with a company that understands the value of continual service improvement. It Manager | It Onsite Services North/South AmericaAmd Apr 2004 - Dec 2014Santa Clara, California, UsI received an invitation to join AMD just as my current employer was ramping up efforts to consolidate most IT functions back to their headquarters in Canton, OH. I started at AMD as an IT Tech reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, supporting a relatively new engineering office near Boston. I grew with this site as one of 2 IT techs supporting 60 engineers, to IT manager in just a few years, of a site with over 500 design engineers and AMD’s largest engineering data center. Several years ago I moved to Austin to take on the expanded role of overseeing support teams at all North & South American sites (supporting 5000+ users), as well as guidance of an offshore IT Service Desk (supporting 10,000+ users globally).• For my last 4 months at AMD, I was focused primarily on training and transition of all support to an outsourced Managed Services company; replacing myself, my teams, and most all other IT infrastructure teams within AMD. Although this was a difficult task on many levels, I’m proud of the work I did to prepare these new teams to succeed in their mission.• My team and I supported AMD’s largest mission critical data center, which contained 4000+ servers, 24,000+ CPU cores, plus all supporting network and infrastructure. The local power grid became plagued with frequent power outages (more than 12 in one year!), but due to economic situations at the time, it was decided not to add generator backup or extended UPS to alleviate the pain or cost (calculated at over $200k for 8 hours) of these down-times. I was able to streamline the processes and procedures for recovery, reducing the recovery time from 8 hours (involving 3-5 techs), to on average 2 hrs, and generally only requiring 1 on-site tech.• I was also responsible for vendor management for supply of all end-user devices and peripherals; researching, testing, and setting company standards for end-user hardware globally. -
It SpecialistThe Timken Company Jul 1997 - Apr 2004North Canton, Oh, UsI started at Timken on the desktop support team, right out of a career in Retail Management. It was quite different going from managing a sales staff of 25, to being an individual contributor in IT support, but I enjoyed the new challenges and the customer service aspect of the job. I earned my Novell CNE certification (Novell? Yes, I know; but at that time it was at least equivalent to the Microsoft MCSE/MCSA), and quickly progressed to higher tier support levels, and team lead.• While at Timken, I was involved in a multi-year ERP implementation project, tasked with planning and roll-out of a JD Edwards ERP system to multiple sites. I was operations lead on the project, so responsible for ensuring all hardware configurations where properly sized and configured to handle the load, as well as minimize latency issues for remote and overseas sites. After the project was successfully completed, I handled all periodic software upgrades, and roll-out of weekly programming changes.• Part of my team’s role was to maintain all laptops, desktops, servers, and networks at 4 sites. Working with my division head of IT, I did a feasibility study into leasing PC and server hardware. We determined this would reduce our capital expenditures, as well as total cost of ownership, so the project was given the green light to proceed. I planned the project, negotiated with vendors and leasing companies, and rolled out the program to all 4 sites across the US; replacing 800+ systems, with 30-36 month leases. This also resulted in our continuing to reduce costs with each new lease going forward.• During my last few months with Timken, I worked with one of our business managers on the sale of 2 business units at remote locations. What began as simply answering a few IT related questions for the business manager, turned into my developing and implementing the IT and Security procedures for the divestiture process; resulting in a smooth transition to the new owner.
