About Terry Doherty

Mr. Doherty graduated from Montana State University in 1991 with a BSEE. He studied ASIC design under Kel Winters, where he worked on a microprocessor which was submitted to MOSIS for fabrication. In 1995, he received an MSEE in Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY where he further studied ASIC design and VLSI engineering. Upon graduationTerry joined IBM in Kingston, NY where he worked on a number of ASIC designs for graphics processing systems. He worked on graphics processors for 5080 and 6090 MFI systems and later worked on graphics processors for AIX Power and PowerPC workstations. After IBM, Terry joined ATL Ultrasound in a newly formed hand-held ultrasound group. This group later spun off and became SonoSite. At ATL and SonoSite Terry worked in the ASIC group on DSP ASICs. He worked closely with SonoSite's CTO J.J. Hwang where together with his colleagues they developed and patented a new method for measuring the direction and strength of blood flow. Even though this was not part of the company's project plans it resulted in a new successful product which the company marketed and sold.At Terabeam Terry worked on a combined network router and Ethernet NIC where he wrote RTL, ran simulations and debug in the lab.Terry joined the Vixel ASIC group with a primary focus on system modeling and analysis in the nascent ESL design space. Vixel was later acquired by Emulex in 2003. Terry is still part of the ASIC group working in the ASIC architecture team with system modeling and analysis. He has contributed to a number of patents at Emulex and has become a contributor to ESL technology. Lead engineer for ASIC Design. Responsible for all aspects of ASIC design from inception to manufacturing test. Responsible for ASIC vendor relationship including contracts and for relationships with EDA vendors. All ASIC design and verification infrastructure was built from scratch using SystemVerilog, UVM and python scripts. Also responsible for the development of FPGA prototypes for early integration of SW and for additional validation of the ASIC design. Responsible for developing ASIC test firmware and assisting in development of ASIC firmware. Also responsible for integration of ECG and Digital Auscultation data into the system. In addition to the duties of ASIC design lead, I negotiated contracts with ISP and phone vendors, and helped design our building's IT infrastructure.

Member of the ASIC architecture team primarily responsible for ESL on a variety of projects from conception, to implementation and system analysis. Converged Network Adaptors and Storage systems are modeled from end to end, including end point devices, Switches, and hard drives. Models provide analysis capabilities and feedback to architecture, firmware, ASIC and marketing teams early in the design process. This work gives me a wide breadth and depth of view system design from applications and drivers, to firmware and ASIC logic in I/O devices, network switches and network target devices. In total I worked on 18 major projects during my tenure at Vixel and Emulex.- Focal point in Emulex for System Level Modeling and ESL. Developed many industry contacts presenting papers at conferences and giving tutorials on system level modeling.- Created a number of innovative tools to analyze system models including a tool to dump to data to a network analyzer to view and analyze the data as if it was captured in the lab. Developed analysis tools using software libraries developed for the Large Hadron Collider.- Required to interface with a variety of teams and organizations.- Submitted a number of patents while at Emulex four of which have been granted by the USPatent Office.- Worked on four generations of the InSpeed Fibre-Channel loop switch ASIC. Worked on Fibre-Channel Fabric switch ASIC with embedded ARM processors and SPI-4 interconnect. Responsible for modeling, system analysis and performance analysis. Instrumental in developing a custom QoS implementation.- Worked on three Fibre-Channel HBAs with multiple embedded ARM processors. Developed a custom Virtual Prototype to use the ARM ISS to run real firmware on the virtual platform.- Worked on four generations of Converged Network Adapters (CNA) with embedded ARM and Tensilica processors. Responsible for modeling, system analysis and performance analysis.

At Terabeam Terry joined the ASIC group which was working on a proprietary combination network router and NIC for use in Terabeam's networks which were being set up in cities around the country. The network router and NIC was a significant design challenge since it required operational speeds of 125 MHz, but was implemented in its first incarnation as an FPGA using a Xilinx Virtex 1000 part. This was a difficult task in that technology and took careful crafting of the RTL to meet timing and to avoid overflowing the part.
