Ellis Island

When an 85-year-old man cries on your shoulder because he is standing on the very spot his mother did 90-some years ago on Ellis Island, you know you've made a connection. Sure, I give tours of the place where 24 million immigrants first stepped foot in America. But a tape recorder could do that. I tell stories. I bring to life the men and women and children who flooded this place prior to and shortly after the turn of the 20th century. I bring life to the ghosts of Ellis Island who not only became the new Americans, but who the ancestors of the one and a half million people who visit this National Park every year.

Isn't that an awful name for a place to work? Despite it, I worked there, as a consultant to the group charged with bringing the 2022 FIFA World Cup to that tiny Arab nation. It was an experience of a lifetime, living in a place where gas is cheaper than water and soldiers on camels parade around Qatar's version of the U.S. Capitol.The group there was looking to start a magazine, which I helped them gear up for. They were looking for content for their various platforms - website; inhouse newsletter; direct contacts with partners, outside governments and stakeholders, templates for which I provided. As I look back what I did best was help bring together talented people from all over the globe (the U.S. Britain, Austrailia, Mauritania, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, India) and set them on a path for the successful staging of the world's most popular sporting event.

The beautiful East End of Long Island is home to the rich and famous, especially in summertime. How they live and play and work and socialize was the fodder for this gorgeous magazine, reflected in its glossy pages of fine prose and stunning photography. And we never forgot the people who live there year round, the farmers and artists and surfers and wait staff and wine makers, who can truly say that they wag the tail of the fish that is Long Island.

In charge of sports, features, Sunday, and Page 1. By bringing magazine conceits to daily newspapering, I helped change the look and success of this vital publication in one of New York City's northern suburbs. It was cool to have CNN anchor Aaron Brown hold up your Page 1 on air during the start of the war in Iraq because of our "spunky and spirited" coverage. In fact he did it dozens of times. It was cooler, still, to be one of the few newspapers in the country bucking the trend of falling circulation, growing an average of 3% year-over-year during my time there.

Edited MLB, NHL, Tennis, Nascar, Letters to Editor, among others. Found and groomed writers; conceived stories from idea to layout; worked side-by-side with designers, photographers and editors to create a wildly-successful new publication that became the print arm of the ESPN network; edited Barry Melrose's popular hockey column; worked with the likes of Peter Gammons, Tim Keown, Tom Friend and Curry Kirkpatrick
