Blue Ocean Barns is supporting producers and users of meat and dairy products by significantly reducing the climate impact of cattle.Our solution is a special variety of a red algae (Asparagopsis taxiformis). When minimally processed and fed in small amounts to cattle, the natural oils in this algae reduce their methane emissions by over 80%.

Worked in Environmental Biotechnology focused on developing and improving algae species for various applications through genetics. Worked on a U.S. Department of Agriculture & Poultry Science Association project that aims to transform nutrition and water use in the poultry industry in order to improve its environmental impact and enhance human health. My focus was developing microalgae (chlamydomonas) strains as an alternative feed protein enhanced by carotenoids.

Responsible for the overall execution of the Range and Training Land Assessment (RTLA) Program support for Pōhakuloa Training Area's (PTA) Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program.Provides vegetation inventory, monitoring, and data collection support to implement the RTLA work plan on training areas (133,000 acres), to include photo points monitoring, vegetation encroachment assessment, maneuver access trail network condition, maneuver damage, and invasive species monitoring that could impact training and effectiveness of LRAM practices.Use handheld and vehicle mounted GPS-Global Positioning System (Trimble Geo7x) and a GIS-Geographic Information System program (ArcMap) to create maps and catalog data.Uses standard scientific field methods and follows the guidance of the ITAM Program Manager to assess conditions of training resources including trails, FPs, LZs, DZs, and maneuver land. Conduct biological assessments of Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance (LRAM) reclamation activities, analyze results, report findings, and make recommendations on land management and restoration practices.Conduct range inventories and assessments to analyze the impact to the land resulting from military training and recommending various land management practices on how to mitigate impacts.Responsible for the development of environmental reports, plans, and impacts statements.

Provide extensive in-house service to homeowners and vacation renters in over 250+ homes. Perform inspections to ensure the integrity of buildings and property. Conduct plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, appliances and lighting repairs. Provide resolution of trouble calls for a myriad of issues like internet connection, TV operation, and air conditioning. Create, resolve, and document work orders, supply lists, and maintenance records.

Overall project objective to establish living shorelines through erosion control, reef construction and restoration, mitigation and recreational habitat, estuary, wildlife and fishery enhancement, and stock replenishment. Monitored and maintained optimal production of all algae systems including but not limited to the cultivation of Tisochrysis lutea, Isochrysis galbana, Pavlova lutheri, Tetraselmis sp., Rhrodomonas salina, Nannochloropsis granulata, Chaetoceros muelleri and Chaetoceros calcitrans. Designed and implemented standard operating procedures for all aspects of the algae lab, including development of research plans. Gathered daily water quality samples, monitored salinity and temperature, and adjusted cultivation systems as needed to maintain optimal levels. Completed the design (drafted blueprints by hand), build (carpentry, plumbing, electrical), and launch of a semi-portable, self-contained algae cultivation and grow-out lab. The lab operated as support to a land-based (artificial seawater) recirculating aquaculture oyster hatchery (production of algae as nutrition for oysters). Assisted in oyster spawning (natural and strip) and daily grow-out operations of the oyster hatchery.Supervised carpentry helpers, hired and trained staff to operate algae facility. Created work orders, maintained inventory lists, processed supply orders, and maintained office space.

Instructed a non-credit training course offered by HCC in sustainable food production with a focus in aquaponics and hydroponics, to the prison population of Kulani Correctional Facility. Implemented GAP (good agricultural practices) training.Built various agricultural systems, monitored agriculture production, took measurements of harvest yields, nutrient levels, and water quality. Developed and maintained working relationships with HCC Program Coordinator, Kulani Correctional Facility officials and community stakeholders.

September 2015: Moved to the position of Haematococcus Production Manager (company restructuring) with duties now focused solely on the cultivation and production of Haematococcus pluvialis. This includes all duties from the small scale cultivation lab through the harvest of the ripe & mature algae.March 2015: Promoted to the position of Algae Production Manager. Overseeing all of the larger scale algae systems, the grow-out process and harvest for those systems. Working with Haematococcus pluvialis and Spirulina pacifica.September 2014: Hired as an Algae Cultivation Technician, working with production lab work of Haematococcus pluvialis.Duties include:Oversee all algae production and field crews associated with the production of Haematococcus pluvialis and Spirulina pacifica.Operate a variety of equipment in an aquaculture environment, including pumps, boilers and cultivation equipment.Examine cultivation logs to understand the current condition of the microalgae system and work with teams to find ways to improve production.Consistently maintain all cultivation and production areas according to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) requirements.Maintain extensive and detailed logs/records accurately.Oversee shutdown, sanitation and startup of all Haematococcus Pluvialis cultivation systems also including periodic maintenance.Support all team members in accomplishing all daily work.

Managed 50+ employees in the construction of the largest dairy expansion project in the State of Hawai'i. Coordinated administrative duties with corporate office, conducted interviews, hired and terminated employees, performed disciplinary counseling, participated in employee benefits package coordination, payroll, and timekeeping.Conducted soil compaction testing for the project using a Humboldt Dual Mass DCP (Dynamic Cone Penetrometer).
