My name is Teru Ueki and I'm currently a junior, studying Human Development and Family Studies at Seattle Pacific University. I never really knew what I wanted to pursue career-wise until I changed majors during my freshman year at SPU. I originally enrolled for a BA in Computer Science but one quarter was enough to figure out that it wasn't a field I wanted to pursue a career in. I talked to my academic counselor about changing majors and that's when I figured out I wanted a career in the Family and Consumer Science field by switching to Human Development and Family studies. I realized that after years of volunteering at my church by helping teach Sunday school classes to kids, I wanted to pursue a humanities-forward career.I've mostly worked with young kids, mostly from the ages of five to six, and with my current position at Our Beginning (a Montessori school), I've begun to work with kids in the two to five age range. Working at Our Beginning has given me a lot of insight into ways I can care for kids such as teaching them how to redirect conflict and encourage them to communicate their feelings.
