I taught second semester Intermediate Accounting for one term (6 month full-time commitment), including some of the more difficult accounting topics such as equity compensation, earnings per share, income taxes, revenue recognition, leases, and the statement of cash flows.

Bay Bank, FSB, headquartered in Lutherville, MD, serves small to middle-market businesses, professional services firms, nonprofits and individuals with a broad array of personal and business banking products and services. Placed in this consulting assignment by Hudson Financial Solutions, I helped the bank measure and account for its risk of loan losses by enhancing an existing Excel model with an improved methodology using vlookups and pivot tables. To further improve the analysis, I conducted accounting research on proper treatment of difficult issues, created an Excel model for migration analysis of historical losses, and performed quarterly economic analysis.

Northwest Biotherapeutics, located in Bethesda, MD, is an innovative biotechnology firm involved in developing and commercializing immunotherapy products that generate and enhance immune system responses to treat cancer. This was a coveted opportunity, afforded to me by the consulting firm Risk Management Advisory Services, to perform controllership functions, especially the year-end close, involving hands on GL accounting for bank reconciliations, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, loan interest expense, health insurance, and payroll.

Corporate Office Properties Trust (COPT), headquartered in Columbia, MD, is an office real estate investment trust, focusing on U.S. Government and Defense Information Technology tenants. COPT is a dominant office landlord in the Greater Baltimore & Washington, DC region. This was another Mergis contractor placement, in which I assisted the company's SEC reporting manager in myriad aspects of 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K and proxy statement production, including journal entry preparation, MD&A, footnote preparation, and FIN46 (variable interest entity) accounting research.

XM Satellite Radio, now merged with Sirius, was a dynamic, entrepreneurial company providing pay-for-service satellite radio to channels reaching across the U.S., including automobile, home and business. My work for this company, as a consulting associate of Resources Global Professionals, actually involved two tours totally about 10.5 months. I consulted on SEC 10-Q and 10-K reporting, assisting in the production of these reports. One interesting achievement of my work at XM was enhancement of reporting efficiency and accuracy by dynamically linking tables in the SEC reports in Word to the source tables in Excel, so that data changes did not have to be rekeyed in the filing document. I also improved the process of providing data (PBC) to the external auditors for the annual audit, so it was clear to department managers what data they needed to provide, how to provide it, and the deadline.

Sandy Spring Bancorp is a historic full-service community bank founded in 1864 which has thrived in all economic conditions since that time. During my employment there, it increased in size from $130 million in total assets to $2.4 billion. I created and managed the financial reporting function at the bank during this period of growth, eliciting the cooperation of department managers throughout the bank, preparing the reports, including financial statements and footnotes, MD&A and all supporting schedules, with hands-on dedication and meeting all deadlines. Special duties included strategic planning, economic forecasting, peer review, analysis of new accounting standards, capital budgeting, and reporting of financial results at quarterly meetings of the bank's officers.
