About Tessa Cooper

I am a conservation biologist, with a passion for education and its role in changing behavior and mindsets towards wildlife. I currently work for TRAFFIC in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area to combat wildlife crime through research, capacity building, and policy interventions.I completed my MSc thesis in Zoology at Stellenbosch University, examining the relationship between changing forest distributions and the extent of forest-dependent bird species within South Africa. Prior to this, I completed my BSc in Conservation Ecology at Stellenbosch University in 2013, majoring in conservation ecology and entomology. My research interests include wildlife crime, avian ecology, forest ecology, behavioral ecology, threatened species ecology, island biogeography, environmental law and policy, and protected areas management. I was responsible for TRAFFIC's outcomes in a multi-consultancy project to develop a transboundary, trans-agency wildlife crime law-enforcement framework for the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA), in addition to aiding in the implementation of other projects in the KAZA TFCA Partner States. My role included legislation analysis, wildlife and timber crime research and analysis, report production, planning and overseeing workshops and capacity building, presentation of recommended actions to government working groups, collaboration with the various KAZA governance mechanisms and stakeholders, and proposal development. In 2021 and 2022 I worked with the KAZA Secretariat on the development of and training of focal points for a wildlife crime database and platform that allows visualization of wildlife crime data. In 2023 I contributed to the development of a first-of-its-kind wildlife ranger operations room and intelligence analysis training course, and was one of the trainers at the inaugural course in October 2023. In 2024 I helped organize a tri-nation interagency workshop on combating wildlife crime, and presented on wildlife crime to Angola's parliament.
