Annakairali started as a networked movement towards food sovereignty. A group of youngsters came together to work on land and later on spread the action to nearby schools and villages. The story has inspired many others from fields of technology and allied subjects to join the farming sector in Kerala. From its beginning stages, this movement embraced an action oriented working plan. It operationalised the visionary work focussing on connecting schools and farmers directly to create farms in schools, taking uncultivated land for lease with support of schools and farmers, preserving seed varieties through harvest of indigenous varieties etc. A lot of time and effort went into understanding the mostly undocumented indigenous farming methods and seed varieties in our land. The results of the study and connections made continue into the natural farming practices of the group- growing rice and vegetables for nearly seven years now, along with our social outreach activities. Now as it looks out from the safety and strength of its relationship with the soil and an ecological vision, the network feels that it is essential that we have a tool to represent voice of different aspects in the sustainability puzzle. And thus we are at a significant part in our journey of brining out a magazine which we feel further spread the power of this movement through the power of written word. That is Annakairali for you.
