Sound holds tremendous power as a storytelling tool in film and TV, and that power should be wielded by crews as diverse as our audiences. We are excited to be a part of bringing a richer tapestry of perspectives and experiences to the stories we tell.Alicia Butterworth, a sound recordist, and Tfer Newsome, a post sound expert, are friends, industry soundos and university lecturers. In 2020, Alicia was working on a doco that needed female crew, but also had a newborn baby and didn’t want to work the long hours documentary sometimes calls for. When she couldn’t find any female soundos to cover her on the shoot, her and Tfer started a Facebook group. That group became a safe place for emerging soundos to ask questions, borrow gear, and refer each other work. That group was also the spark that inspired this project.Several years on, with the support of a grant from the Screenrights Cultural Fund and generous brand sponsorships, we are thrilled to announce our initiative's funding for emerging and underrepresented screen sound professionals in Brisbane, Australia. This support is enabling us to bring together some of Australia's most experienced female and non-binary sound practitioners to run a series of training workshops. As well as putting together a kit of industry-standard equipment that our members will be able to access long-term as they build their networks.We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Screenrights and our brand sponsors for making this journey possible. Together, we share a vision of a future where the screen sound industry is inclusive and dynamic, empowering all practitioners to shape the future of sound in film.
