I acquired a placement with IHI Infrastructure Systems Co., Ltd. through IAESTE (the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience). During my time with IHI, I worked with the Construction, Bridge Engineering, Gate and Penstock Engineering, Production, Quality Control, and Overseas Project departments. I utilized Microsoft Excel to perform design calculations for bridges according to Japanese structural specifications. I created AutoCAD drawings for simple girder bridges, radial gates, construction plans, and scaffolding systems. I used midas Civil to model deformations in the Osman Gazi Bridge in Turkey for different traffic situations as a training exercise. Lastly, I assisted quality control engineers on routine product inspections to ensure paint and weld quality. Through this internship, I gained a significant understanding of the bridge and gate engineering processes, including how the work of many different teams allows complex projects to come to fruition.
