For almost thirty years, I have held management roles in both the private and nonprofit sectors. I care about leading teams and coaching people to achieve meaningful change. Over the course of the last decade, my work has focused on the implications of digital infrastructure for democratic institutions in society, both in the United States and around the world. Systems thinking and development of strategies that address complex problems are core to my work. I am deeply interested in the nature of organizations, networks, and collaboration that will best support peace, security, equity, and economic justice. I lead the programmatic work as a member of the executive team at the Democracy Fund, a private foundation that champions the leaders and solutions making American democracy more open and just. We support partners and ideas from across the political spectrum in pursuit of a vibrant and diverse public square, free and fair elections, effective and accountable government, and a just and inclusive society. In 2019, I earned a PhD from the Columbia School of Journalism for a dissertation called “The Digital Public Square: Understanding the Dynamics of Data, Platforms, and News.” My research centered on the intersection of journalism practices, news media institutions, digital infrastructure, media and communications policy, and social media. I began my career in the private sector in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States, first as a financial analyst for an engineering firm, then as a management consultant working on information technology implementations, operations, organizational change, and cost management. After fifteen years, I transitioned (through a two-year degree at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs) to the nonprofit sector. Before joining the Democracy Fund in 2012, I worked for a think tank, where I led work on media policy, addressing the challenges facing journalism. Prior to this, I worked for a nonprofit building advocacy networks by leveraging social media tools. I have been on the board of the Outward Bound Center for Peacebuilding, which I helped found, since 2007.
