I was an active volunteer with Let's Talk Science, a science outreach program for children in grade and high school. I did in-class science demonstrations for students in Grades 4 through 12 on topics ranging from cryogenics to electricity and magnetism to Newtonian mechanics. I also volunteer as a science fair judge for the Calgary Youth Science Fair.

My research focused primarily on characterizing the optical and electrical characteristics of a class of photochromic organic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Due to the photochromic nature of the SAM, the dielectric constant could be altered significantly and reversibly by exposing to visible light. Ultimately, these SAMs would be used as the dielectric layer in a field effect transistor. Micro- and nano-fabrication techniques were used to fabricate the devices as well as depositing SAMs on monolayer thick gold films. These SAMs were characterized by surface plasmon resonance and atomic force microscopy.

During my tenure in this position, I was involved in all aspects of organic semiconductor growth, processing, device fabrication, and characterization. I also fabricated the first functioning flexible OLED in Canada. Some of the projects that I was involved with include:Developing new lanthanum and lanthanum-yttrium alloy cathode electrodes for OLEDs,Developing a room temperature RF Magetron sputtering process for depositing ITO on organic semiconductors,Creating an organic field effect transistor structure with a pentacene semiconductor which exhibited hole mobilities,Collaborating with researchers at several universities in Canada and Hong Kong to test and evaluate new materials for use in OLEDs and OFETs.Purifying organic semiconductors with a vapour train sublimation system.Molecular modeling of the HOMO-LUMO structure in a novel OPV to aid in the understanding of the structure-property relationships.Creating self-assembled monolayers of 1C to 18C functionalized siloxane molecules.Powder XRD on thin films of organic semiconductorsCreating data acquisition software for a current-luminance-voltage spectrometer and a user interface for a spectrophotometer.
