DevOps and continuous integration engineer for Nike's B2B Sales infrastructure. Work has spanned two major projects - an Adobe AEM (CQ 5.6) infrastructure, as well as a mixed-platform iOS / desktop presentation & asset viewing app. Implemented continuous integration, automated testing and deployment, and infrastructure automation tasks for the aforementioned projects, primarily using Chef for infrastructure automation, Gradle for build & test automation, and Thoughtworks Go for CI. Also Lead engineer on project to move an Adobe CQ5 Content DAM infrastructure to AWS.

Fulfilled multiple System Engineer roles for a multi-stage rollout of the Adobe CQ (aka AEM or Adobe Experience Manager) content management system at Scripps. Roles have included the build-out of new Adobe CQ publish, dispatch & author instances for the Cooking Channel and Food Network, monitoring, performance tuning, load testing and working directly with Adobe to successfully launch Scripps website properties on the CQ platform. Role has also included buildout of a Splunk infrastructure & developing Splunk dashboards for our on-premise system rollout, as well as Sumologic, Geckoboard, and New Relic dashboards for our cloud instances. Designed & rolled out an EC2-based Team City continuous integration toolset (including Rundeck, Sonar, Nexus, etc) and continue to work to build our our automated deployment & testing pipeline.

Senior Linux Systems Engineer and team lead for Web Systems for AARP's outward-facing web presence. Duties included installation & maintenance of technology stack based on Apache / JBoss and Adobe CQ5 CMS. In addition to production support and code deployment, implemented a Splunk data analysis & reporting framework, extensive work with firewall & load balancing systems (F5 LTM & GTM load balancers, Netscreen firewalls, etc) as well as work to implement infrastructure and release automation initiatives using Chef, Jenkins and Rundeck.

Web Developer & Sysadmin for Webworld Technologies, a DC-metro area government & commercial IT services firm. Had two main roles, one as a web application developer for various clients, creating apps in ColdFusion, PHP, ASP and Javascript including custom geospatial apps (Bing Maps / Google Maps), several intranet apps for the U.S. State Dept, and others. Also was a sysadmin for various client sites, running a variety of Win2003/2008 servers, as well as Linux and Solaris servers. Built, installed & secured several Linux/PHP/MySQL servers to run Drupal & Wordpress sites, built dev servers running Linux/Railo/Resin for Java/ColdFusion development, troubleshot Federal Govt servers running Windows and Solaris, built SVN servers for client code, and other various projects.

Was in charge of Internet systems for the Church doing hands-on system administration, development, design and information architecture, as well as managing 2-10 direct reports and as many as 100 indirect reports. Converted the shop from a Windows environment to a Linux environment, running 3-tier Java/J2EE servers for approximately 500 individual websites, including high-profile sites such as the www.scientology.org, www.dianetics.org, www.volunteerministers.org, etc. Installed & managed Java applications based on Sun Java System Application Server, Apache, Tomcat, and Caucho Resin, with SSL implementations on each. Managed implementation of a version-controlled file management and deployment system for all websites using Subversion, and used this also for configuration management across all Internet systems. As part of responsibilities on this position, also was in charge of all messaging servers, anti-spam and mail filtering systems, DNS servers, and database servers – all of which were either Linux or Solaris. Did extensive modifications to Perl-based mail filters to suit the needs of the organization, as well as day-to-day scripting tasks for backup and other administration duties. Also implemented Linux-based firewalling systems across the enterprise, and installed new connectivity for Internet systems such as microwave and terrestrial lines. Much experience at this job with web server security, intrusion detection & prevention, denial-of-service mitigation, and search engine optimization.

Was consultant in charge of a 2-month project to evaluate, recommend, and acquire a new web analytics solution for the Internet, intranet and extranet web presence for Georgia-Pacific Corporation. After conducting an in-person survey of all corporate product managers & stake-holders, did extensive evaluation & testing of 40 different web analytics products, including installation of several Apache/Tomcat systems to test various website analytics products, resulting in a successful recommendation and completion of the project.

Designed and programmed a new website for the U.S. House of Representatives, Veterans Affairs Committee. After a series of interviews with stakeholders and Congressional office executives, designed, programmed & deployed a new 2,000-page website for the committee which immediately won a “Silver Mouse” award from the main Washington, D.C. Information Technology magazine, as being the one of the best-designed new websites on Capitol Hill.

Worked as a Network Engineer and intranet application developer. Performed routine upgrades, maintenance and monitoring systems on a datacenter of approximately 150 Windows servers. Installed & deployed a new Intranet data-sharing site for the Army Surgeon General's sprawling network of offices, based on Microsoft SharePoint server. Deployed a statistics & monitoring system for their intranet applications, to track access for security, usage statistics, as well as uptime, firewall and reliability statistics, and downtime alerting & monitoring for the key web & messaging servers.

Worked in the UUNet Enterprise Web Hosting group as a senior network engineer in Windows and Unix (Solaris) environments. Was the lead network engineer on several high-traffic websites including the Sony Playstation website (www.playstation.com) the Compaq.com website, the Sting [musician] World Tour website, Kraft Foods, and Online Office Supplies. Was a secondary engineer on several other sites including Disney.com, Symantec.com, and several others. Was responsible for custom-building website systems with 2-30 servers each (generally $50k-$750k in hardware), assembling experimental DEC/Compaq RAID systems, installing & configuring clustered & load-balanced web server & MS SQL server environments, and working with the web developers on each project to get all of the website systems working as expected. While at UUNet, also developed intranet web applications for system configuration, change management and documentation.

Contracted as a web analytics consultant, web developer, and NT network engineer. Consulted various clients on web analytics solutions, performed set up and administration of clustered Cold Fusion server environments, as well as graphic design for clients such as Careerbuilder.com and Cable & Wireless USA.

Worked as a Tier 3 NT Systems Engineer at the State Farm Insurance corporate headquarters in Bloomington, IL. As part of a 3-tier network support & engineering team, worked with 8 other engineers to perform network design, server installation and maintenance, intranet application programming and development, and database design for what was (at that time) the largest Windows NT server deployment in the world. Oversaw the deployment and operation of over 22,000 servers, which in turn serviced well over 140,000 desktop users. Supported the deployment of IBM NetFinity Servers to each of the 17,000 State Farm agent offices in the country, created automated installation procedures, and handled all of the support issues which could not be handled by level 1 and level 2 server support teams. Also programmed and deployed a variety of intranet applications written in ASP 1.0, for change management and inventory of server deployments. While at this position, installed, configured and used most every Microsoft Backoffice application quite extensively, including MS Proxy, MS Exchange Server, SMS server, IIS, Secure Config Editor, etc. Also installed/configured all of the standard connectivity services in NT including DHCP server, WINS server, and DNS server.

Worked as a telephone support engineer for WebTrends, eventually promoted to Senior Support Engineer. Responsible for phone, email and on-site support of all WebTrends Internet server management and analysis products. Provided high-level technical assistance to webmasters, system administrators and IT experts on web server utilization, bandwidth tracking, server clusters, NT and UNIX web server administration and performance optimization, Firewall logging, security and bandwidth utilization, DNS server performance issues, NT Workstation/Server performance enhancement, integration of WebTrends products with various databases, e-mail systems, and security systems. As part of support and testing operations, installed numerous web servers including Netscape/Sun web servers and Microsoft IIS web systems.
