CreatorThink 4 Fun Productions Aug 2003 - Sep 2011Portland, InPresentations & professional development to help parents, teachers and administrators promote reading & writing. In order to justify federal funds usage, we compiled a detailed research base. By combining dominant story structure theory (J. Campbell) with recent motivation research (Deci & Ryan), we created programs to increase reading motivation while changing the way parents and teachers saw themselves and their role.BEST PART: Getting paid to write, sing and play music while seeing more people reading as a result. #PricelessWHAT I LEARNED: If you want to make money (and you MUST make money if you want to stay in business) you better learn to talk passionately in terms the buyer cares about.

Actor, Musician, Cast-MemberPbs (Public Broadcasting Service) Oct 2001 - Sep 2003Bloomington, Indiana AreaWrote, created and starred in a weekly segment, titled 'T-Rex in the Zone' of the Emmy Award winning show, "The Friday Zone".BEST PART: Got to write my own material, sing my own material, and have it shared in hundreds of thousands of homes!TRICKY LEARNING EXPERIENCE: I got paid $80 per episode. After writing, rehearsing, commuting and shooting the show... I made about $3/hour and 300 smiles/minute.WHAT I LEARNED: If you're going to stand in front of 50,000 people for 4 minutes, you've got to nail every single detail. Don't forget anything. Be early. Then relax. Nothing goes according to plan in the studio. So why not roll with the punches.

Singer/SongwriterFreelance Jan 1998 - Sep 2001Indianapolis, Indiana AreaWorked with various bands, and as a solo act, touring the country as a multi-instrumentalist musician, singer & songwriter.a.k.a. = Starving Artist... Even McDonald's was a luxury back then...BEST PART: Getting paid enough to become a "professional musician!"BIGGEST HURDLE: Getting paid enough to buy groceries or gasoline (but not both!)WHAT I LEARNED: You can create the most genius song/movie/business idea ever, but if you can't sell it, it's worthless. The ability to engage others is a musician's most valuable skill.

BartenderBloomington Brewing Company 1995 - 1999Bloomington, Indiana AreaPrimarily charged with customer relations (make 'em smile) and quality control (test the beer daily!).BEST PART: See 'quality control' above...MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT: I once spilled a coke on a customer. An entire 16 0z glass of coke. Bought her a brewery T-shirt to wear on her way out, but still mortified!WHAT I LEARNED: When people are involved, anything can happen. People aren't always easy, but they're never boring either. Be flexible. Be prepared, and why not smile.

On-Air Radio DjWimc Fm And Wcvl Am 1991 - 1993Crawfordsville, InStarted as weekend on-air talent on the FM Top 40 Station. Promoted to full time morning drive time DJ on the country AM station side. Regular live remotes and interviews from local festivals/events.In charge of organizing daily on-air interviews with community leaders and other newsworthy individuals.BEST PART: News-time. The news correspondant would sit opposite and we'd yuck it up for the airwaves! Good times.MOST DIFFICULT MOMENTS: Starting work at 4:45am 6 days a week was rough on an 18 year old. I learned to sleep anywhere... Seriously!WHAT I LEARNED: DJ's don't get much autonomy. You get a mic and a list of songs that must be played in the same order over and over. I loved being creative, and realized pretty quickly I was better off building my own path than walking someone else's.
-
On-Air DjWcdv Oct 1989 - 1991Danville, IlPart time On-Air DJ - primarily weekends. Occasionally overnight. Light field work, reporting from local sporting events. FCC license required.BEST PART: 16 yrs old & working radio. Yeah!!!WORST PART: Ummm.... I was 16 yrs old & working radio. Tough to find anything bad about that!WHAT I LEARNED: When you control the mic, you control the tone - so why not make it a good tone.
-
BusboyMike'S Colonial Parkway 1988 - 1989Covington, InI cleared tables and washed dishes. Not much more to it.BEST PART: This was my first job. I was only 14 & got a real paycheck! What's not to love??DIFFICULT BITS: Everything! Washing dishes is tough at home. Do it for hundreds of people and the dragging goes deep!WHAT I LEARNED: Some jobs really suck!
