With 2019 coming to a close I decided to pursue my dream of a year of solo traveling around the Pacific and Southeast Asia! One man, one backpack, and a semi-reliable data signal.Unfortunately, the global pandemic scuttled my plans to go the full year but the memories and people I met along the journey will live with me forever. The experiences and skills I picked up include but are not limited to:• Bungee jumping off of a bridge into an icy river at Kawarau Bridge-- Fun fact: this was the world's first commercial bungee jumping site!• Learning to ride a manual motorcycle• completed the ~1,600 km “Grand Tour” ride from Hanoi to Saigon along the Ho Chi Minh Road-- Fun fact: Top Gear did a special episode on this route (Top Gear: Vietnam Special)!• completed the 350 km ride around the mountains of the “Ha Giang Loop”• Exploring enormous cave systems with a headlamp and rappel system in Phong Nha-- Fun fact: Phong Nha is home to the biggest cave in the world!• Climbing the icy face of a glacier at Franz Josef-- fun fact: it was my first time riding a helicopter when being flown in to the base camp• Kayaking the clear blue waters of the fjord at Milford Sound (called the eighth Wonder of the World by Rudyard Kipling)-- Fun fact: you can drink right out of the water while kayaking since it’s glacier runoff!• Climbing the 500 steps to visit the mountain temple at the peak of Hang Mua• Standing overnight to take in the breathtaking view of the stars at Mt. John Observatory via the Dark Sky Project
