Engineering leader, infrastructure engineer and system architect who is passionate about designing and building scalable and robust systems.Currently building something new at the intersection of GenAI and Cybersecurity.Previously head of Core Infrastructure at Coinbase, where I created and lead the Core Infrastructure group (~60), with a mission to scale and modernize core infrastructure concerns at the company in order to achieve the next level of efficiency and scale (Compute, Routing, Networking, Datastores, Observability, SRE, Incident Command, etc.). Lead efforts that reduced costs by >$15M annually. Previously lead scalability efforts through Coinbase's direct public offering and during critical growth periods (10x-ing throughput).Prior to that, Chief Architect and head of the Engineering Team (~35) at Blackstone. Lead Blackstone's Digital Transformation initiative - move to DevOps methodology, build out cloud-based platform (with focus on developer enablement, security, compliance, and governance), migration of major legacy workloads to the public cloud, and automation and integration of systems and processes.Member of Sequoia.infra (Sequoia Enterprise Infrastructure Council) - regularly meet w/infrastructure peers at leading enterprise and technology companies to discuss emerging trends, latest technologies, and best practices in infrastructure.TCDC (Twitter Cloud Data Center) team at Twitter - we created a Twitter-equivalent datacenter environment inside of AWS in order to allow Twitter services to run in the public cloud. Our primary focus was supporting Twitter's advertising stack so that it could be run in close physical proximity to ad exchanges in order to satisfy tight latency constraints. At TellApart (acq. by Twitter), I lead a team that rolled out an internal Docker/Apache Aurora/Mesos/AWS-based platform in support of a migration from a monolithic application structure to microservices.Previously co-founded AdStack (acq. by TellApart), where I acted as CTO, in order to help email marketers advertise more efficiently.Prior to AdStack, I was at Capital IQ, where I focused on Infrastructure, Real-Time Data, and Technical Hiring.Former AWS Community Hero as co-creator and project lead of The Open Guide to Amazon Web Services (35k stars), an open source guide and reference for AWS practitioners of all experience levels, providing them with tips, tricks and gotchas for the majority of AWS services.

  • Coinbase
    Head Of Core Infrastructure

I created and lead the Core Infrastructure group (which I ultimately grew to over 60 people, making up over half of the Infrastructure team at Coinbase), a collection of subteams with a common mission to scale and modernize core infrastructure concerns at the company (Routing, Compute, and Datastores, and later incorporating Networking, Observability, SRE, Incident Command) in order to achieve the next level of scale, cost efficiency, and reliability.Supported teams in Core Infrastructure in executing several major modernization efforts from end to end: addition of managed L7 ingress routing layer with reliability and resilience features, migration from a home-grown service identity solution to SPIFFE/SPIRE, creation of a modern compute platform (on Kubernetes), migration to that platform of 1000 services / 3500 deployment targets, saving >$15M annually and reducing deployment times by over 60%.Set the example for managers at Coinbase by being in the details on major projects and operationally engaged by sitting on the Major Incident Command team's pager rotation, with direct responsibility for resolving the most severe production incidents at the company.Awarded Company Astronaut award (1 per quarter) for leading from the front in incidents and beyond, setting an example, and consistently being in the details.

  • Coinbase
    Senior Engineering Manager
    Coinbase Jul 2020 - Feb 2022
    Remote First, Us
I joined Coinbase to lead its Reliability Engineering team, where I focused on scaling Coinbase systems in preparation for and through its direct public offering and in order to support the sudden and huge increases in traffic that are common in crypto.I led a key effort at a critical time for the company by creating and operationalizing a scaling approach that included identification of bottlenecks through load testing, the addressing of those bottlenecks across through tuning and rearchitecture across the company (hundreds of bottlenecks across around one hundred teams), and ultimately a shift in focus to resiliency. I did this by leading from the front, attending almost every load test for 8 months straight, keeping the momentum of the effort up and teams unblocked. We achieved our ultimate goal of increasing the throughput of Coinbase's systems by a factor of 10 and eliminated a major class of system failures as a result.
