About Felipe Muñoz Oyarzo

My talent pool is broad, as are my interests, so it’s hard to choose a starting point for a summary. The brunt of my formal studies has been in Philosophy, but I’ve also delved in Political Science, Literature and Economics. I dipped my toes in the academic world, first as a teacher assistant for a few different courses and then by engaging in some research, for a short time--all the while participating in the creation of a documentary. While attending University, I tried getting into comic books by writing a graphic novel, and joined some friends in organizing videogame workshops and gamejams; as both a way to learn about the development process, and spread the good word of videogames as a creative outlet. In early 2016 I joined the Omen of Sorrow team as script supervisor and scenario creator. Since my work experience lied on the writing and creative side, that’s where I made my start in the industry. However, given my lifelong, extensive experience with fighting games, I was soon offered a more prominent role as Combat Director and Lead Game Designer. In the guerrilla environment of low-budget development, it became necessary to wear as many hats as possible. Albeit tough, it was a fantastic learning and growing experience, and paved the way for what I do today.Currently, me and other former members of the Omen of Sorrow team have started our own venture into Game Development, aptly named Stormlight Studios.

    Worked in the development of the game Omen of Sorrow, a 2D fighting game currently launched and live in the PS4 and PC platforms. As head of the designing team it was my responsibility to oversee all parts of the creative process, at both the concept and production levels. During the development process my main responsibility was the design and implementation of all aspects of combat, as well as leading others towards ensuring we gave Omen of Sorrow a cohesive, consistent look and feel that would enhance the gameplay experience; working closely with technical artists, illustrators, VFX artists, modellers and animators. Omen of Sorrow was developed with Unreal Engine 4, with a custom gameplay engine developed in C++, and GGPO netcode.

    As writer and scenario designer, I was tasked with creating the lore, flavor and mythology for all characters’ backgrounds and shared world, as well as overseeing the look and feel of all in-game characters. My responsibilities extended to working closely with the art team so that the worldbuilding and general atmosphere and feel of the game were consistent and in sync with one another. Finally, as the team’s script writer, I was in charge of writing the entirety of the story mode plus all other story and lore materials.It’s relevant to note that, during pre-production, I was also tasked with most of the art director responsibilities, some of which I was then able to delegate to other members of the art team during production.
