T.H. Breen (born in Cincinnati, Ohio) is the William Smith Mason Professor of American History at Northwestern University. He is also the founding director of the Kaplan Humanities Center and the Nicholas D. Chabraja Center for Historical Studies at Northwestern. A specialist on the American Revolution, Breen has published seven books and over sixty articles. His most recent volume "American Insurgents, American Patriots: The Revolution of the People" appeared in 2012. "Marketplace of Revolution: How Consumer Politics Shaped American Independence" (2004), "Tobacco Culture: The Mentality of the Great Tidewater Planters on the Eve of Revolution" (1985), and "Imagining the Past: East Hampton Histories" (1989) won major prizes. He holds several awards for distinguished teaching from Northwestern. In 2015 Simon and Schuster published his "George Washington's Journey: The President Forges a New Nation." In November 2014 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Munich and a fellow that the Rachel Carson Center for Environmental Studies, in the spring of 2015 he was a resident consultant at Colonial Williamsburg. In 2019 Harvard University Press published his "The Will of the People: The Revolutionary Birth of America." The paperback edition will appear in April 2021. Breen writes occasionally for the New York Review of Books and other national magazines.
