Dr. Tegwyn Brickhouse is Professor and Chair of the Department of Dental Public Health and Policy at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), School of Dentistry. She came to VCU as a faculty member in 2003 after working in private practice with Dr. Scott Goodman at Pediatric Dentistry of Matthews and Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Tegwyn served as the Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at VCU from 2009-2017.Tegwyn's leadership roles have spanned multiple organizations such as the Virginia Dental Association, President of the Virginia Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Chair of the AAPD Council on Scientific Affairs, and serving on the AAPD Board of Trustees from 2017-2020. She currently serves on the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry’s Qualifying Exam Committee and as an OCE examiner. In 2010, Tegwyn help to initiate and build a statewide non-profit called the Virginia Oral Health Coalition. She served as the founding chair of its board until 2016. It has grown into a national recognized organization known as Virginia Health Catalyst where she currently serves as a board member and part of the Water Equity Task Force.Tegwyn earned her dental degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry and received her pediatric dentistry specialty training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also earned a Ph.D. in Epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public health and completed a Dental Public Health residency at the North Carolina Oral Health Section in Raleigh, NC.Tegwyn's work has included numerous federal grants from both NIH and HRSA. She also serves as children’s oral health policy expert at both community, state, and national level. Clinically, she is a practicing pediatric dentist who treats predominately-underserved children and families. Tegwyn is actively involved in oral health disparities research and works with community partners to integrate oral health into overall health. She strives to integrate behavioral, social, economic, and cultural factors into her work. Tegwyn directs VCU’s iCubed Oral Health Core that seeks to identify and remove the educational, political, psychological, social and nutritional barriers to good oral health.Tegwyn has two daughters, Cara Lee and May Belle, and enjoys running, fishing the Chesapeake Bay, and sailing with her husband Todd.—© 2011 - 2023 Tegwyn H.
