Growing up with limited resources in Birmingham, Alabama with my dad away in the army, an ambitious resourceful mother and a supportive community, I learned early on that I could achieve anything I set out to accomplish, but that it would be up to me to make it happen. I graduated valedictorian of my high school, enlisted in the navy, earned a full college scholarship, and then joined as an officer in the prestigious navy nuclear propulsion program. It was here I honed my leadership and operations skills, becoming one of a handful of officers trusted to lead carrier navigation teams during all weather and operational conditions. Leadership came naturally and I enjoyed helping others solve problems.
