At Jamf, I automate. I work with a high-performing team of engineers dedicated to the software build and release tools, infrastructure and lifecycle. We automate everything to enable our engineers to ship code faster, better tested, more secure. We constantly work to modernize our tooling and deployments. Several notable achievements from the past two years:- We migrated our entire stack of CI build infrastructure from on-premise handcrafted snowflake VMs to Kubernetes running on AWS managed services: EKS, RDS, NFS, etc.- We migrated our CI pipelines from Bamboo to Jenkins, including macOS/iOS apps, Java/Kotlin apps, Go apps, Docker image builds, and more- Migrated our largest project from Maven to Gradle, speeding up build times by 65% utilizing the Gradle build cache- We implemented Kubernetes autoscaling coupled with AWS EC2 Spot instances, eliminating performance pain and achieving 70% cost savingsIn addition to keeping the build infrastructure running smoothly, I love writing code and build custom tooling to glue together our workflows. I create Gradle plugins. I spearhead our Jenkins shared library development, where we standardize pipelines and deployments, dramatically reducing the overhead for the engineering teams to be productive with Jenkins. I have led several workshops to share knowledge on our various tools, including Gradle, Jenkins and AWS. I have a working knowledge of serverless patterns in AWS, although I am not an expert. I am an active proponent of the DevOps culture, and pursuing excellence in our craft.

At Jamf, I'm the jack-of-all-trades, the handyman, the automator.Our core product, Jamf Pro, is the leading MDM solution for IT administrators managing Apple devices. Since I work primarily with the "Integrations" components, I develop, test and automate the various components peripheral to the core product. These components include Mac, Linux and Windows installers, Apache Tomcat upgrades, database tools, and a handful of plugins (both embedded apps and standalone microservices, each with their own installers).While we're primarily a Java shop, my job is different. With such a widely varying set of components and such a small team, I'm working with several languages and technologies every day. I could be writing Java or C# in some plugins, cleaning up bash scripts for an installer package, creating new Gradle or Makefile builds, or writing automated tests using Groovy, Spock and Geb.Automated testing has been a major focus of my time at Jamf. With such diverse components to test, it's been a great challenge to automate them all in a clean, maintainable and developer-friendly way. Heavily utilizing existing open-source projects, I've created several custom testing tools in Groovy, a Spock extension, and several Gradle plugins. The result is a declarative and concise DSL (domain-specific language) that we use with Spock for end-to-end testing of our components. This testing works at every level, from running system commands (on any platform), to verifying filesystem state after an install, to hitting the REST API with data, to interacting with the web UI using Geb.I love automation, clean code, and learning new things. At Jamf, I get to do all three.

At The Codesmith, I love turning ideas into code, and from code crafting beautiful software. The Codesmith is my umbrella organization for all my independent work, consulting and contracting. My most notable project has certainly been the design, development and maintenance of a commercial software package called the Proactive Maintenance Toolbox. This project was commissioned in 2010 by ALERT Analytical, LLC, an industrial maintenance analysis and training company based out of Ashland, Wisconsin. The Toolbox is a software suite designed for maintenance managers and craftsmen, built to enable easy data input and tracking of equipment details and maintenance history. The product was launched successfully in 2012, went through several major iterations of features and bug fixes, and is now used daily at major industrial sites, including a Fortune 500 company or two.In my time doing independent software projects, I have come to value intuitive and clean user interface designs, elegant and maintainable code (especially after having to maintain my own poorly written code from the past!), and principles of agile software development that foster rapid iteration and delivery. I love what I do, and will continue to sharpen my skills in the pursuit of excellence.

What a wonderful opportunity it has been to work at one of the most iconic companies in supercomputing! At Cray, I am surrounded by some of the brightest people in the business. The company truly takes care of their people, and the work environment is fantastic.In my time at Cray, I have been tasked with streamlining our testing workflow. This entails integrating our existing tools as well as creating new ones. Our automated testing system is built on the Robot Framework and tailored for use on our massively distributed systems. Bug tracking is managed in JIRA, and our test case management is stored in TestLink. My solution for integration has been to create a centralized web app that will allow the rapid entry of test cases, test run results, bug tracker tickets, and provide clear and intuitive insights into the data and progress of our product test runs. Since our glue language of choice is Python, I used Django (a Rails-like rapid web application framework built on Python) for the implementation. The code is versioned in Git and stored on GitHub, environments are consistent and reproducible using Vagrant virtual machines, deploys are scripted and automated using Ansible. This project has been a great opportunity to dive into test-driven development, and I love it! TDD is something I had read a lot before but never taken the time to incorporate into my workflow. After tasting the quality of code that it produces and the stability and confidence a passing test suite provides, I will never go back. My unit and functional test suite is run on a continuous integration server after every push to GitHub, and pushed to production on every passing build. Automation rocks.This summer has been a great immersion in Cray's technology and culture, and I am so grateful for the opportunity. I have been given the chance to be creative, propose solutions, research, learn and implement new ideas. I hope I have been able to provide value back to the company in the process!

Thinking I would pay the bills for a few months while I found a "real"​ job, I started at Starbucks as a barista in 2006. I quickly fell in love with the people, the coffee, and the culture, and somehow five and a half years went by like it was a few months.When I started as a barista I was terribly shy, and barely interacted with customers. How I got the job in the first place I'll never understand (thanks to my manager Patty for giving me a chance anyway!). Of the many things I learned while at Starbucks, some that transformed me the most are an outgoing personality, a love for meeting new people, and an ability to make conversation with strangers and friends. I loved learning about our coffee and was soon obsessed with doing coffee tastings at the store. Pair some french pressed Organic Yukon Blend with a double-chocolate brownie sometime, and you'll see what I mean! I completed the Starbucks Coffee Master program, and still have the black apron to this day. Sadly, my first store in the Oakwood Mall closed at the end of 2008, but it was the beginning of a new chapter when I moved to the Hastings Way store.At Hastings, I became a shift supervisor and pioneered several projects over the next two years. I loved crafting perfect drinks, exactly what a customer was looking for, and see the smile on their face after a sip. Priceless. I tried to perfect my process and style, and enjoyed leading training for new partners, as well as store-wide meetings on beverage quality and customer satisfaction. In addition I spearheaded our launch of warmed foods in 2010, including planning, setup, and training others in the months leading up to the launch. Following the success of the warming launch and the customer satisfaction initiatives, I was promoted to assistant store manager at the Clairemont Avenue store. After a year there, I was accepted to UWEC to continue my computer science education, and left Starbucks at the end of December, after five and a half great years.
