Senior Mechanical Engineer

Oxford, England, United Kingdom

I currently work as a Senior Mechanical Engineer for Oxford Flow, working predominantly on our ES axial valve. Within this role I am responsible for the design of the ES valve and the expanding of its range to other sizes and pressure, while ensuring it is still fit for purpose and safe to use. I frequently work on 3D models as well as detailed technical drawings providing adequate GD&T to ensure the consistency of the products. I work alongside other engineers from graduates and year in industry students to long serving members of the company and principal engineers. To ratify my designs I use a number of different methods from hand calculations to computer simulations such as finite element analysis. Documenting the findings to build a technical file to prove the designs comply to many different international standards. Where relevant I then work with notified bodies to ratify the technical file and get the design passed off for sale. As well as technical files I am also involved in works procedures for production to aid the build and insure it is done correctly as well as producing customer manuals for operation out in the field. As well as completing work myself I also often check technical drawings and designs for other engineers, ensuring the same level of high expectancy that I strive for in my own work.I am also involved in prototype builds of new designs and physical testing to prove out a design and identify any problem so they can be improved or ironed out before the products get to production. I am also involved in meetings to discuss and decide on strategy and the way forward with the product development. These can also be meetings on customer specifications to see if the valve complies to there specification provided or if we can offer something that would be more suited.

Senior Design And Development Engineer

Witney, Oxfordshire

My role of Senior Design & Development Engineer encompasses the same role as when I was a design and development engineer (listed below) with the addition of mentoring junior engineers and managing their workloads.I have been overseeing junior engineers on their projects and suggesting solutions to design problems and approving and signing off drawings in accordance with BS8888 and releasing bills of materials so parts can be acquired. As well as managing other people's workload and time management I still work on projects for active orders and proactive work to tidy up old designs, bringing them in line with current design standards and legislation.Currently I am using Solidworks as a 3D design package incorporating both FEA and CFD to optimise designs. In my role I still maintain a level of hands on engineering when issues arise and deal with fault finding, this is done either with metrology or devising a testing regime that can highlight an item at fault. I also get heavily involved in fatigue testing of new products to ascertain product life span and service intervals.

During my role I have become one of the longest running members of the department and I have had the chance to start checking other individuals work off for them. This involves checking manufacture drawings for inaccuracies and possible errors as well as checking over the technical file before it is signed off for production. I am also responsible for day to day problems with our CAD systems and SAP integration software.I have also attended a selection of training courses with the company including Fluid Power 2 (FP2) at the University of Bath who are a leader in fluid power developments. In addition to my role at Hydac I am also a fire warden which I have been for the last 2 years which has meant completing a course through a local company called Swan Fire. In October 2031 I attended the refresher course of this that has to be completed every two years.
