David Smith is UK Head of Audit Quality & Technical at Azets where he is responsible for ensuring the firm’s delivery of consistent high quality audits around the country.In this role, David is responsible for the firm’s audit approach and providing teams with the support and resources required to perform high quality, risk focussed audit and assurance engagements. David leads the Azets Audit Quality & Technical Team that provide training, resources and support to client-facing teams and quality monitoring to ensure our teams meet our standards.Prior to moving into this role in September 2020, David had been Director of Assurance and Accounting Content at Mercia and was responsible for ensuring that Mercia’s assurance and accountancy content provided innovative, relevant, accurate and practical solutions to thousands of firms of accountants and auditors in practice. As part of this role, David was also responsible for Mercia’s Methodology and Compliance Product portfolio and team.Between joining Mercia from Grant Thornton in 2010, to leaving in 2020, David played a key role in developing the Mercia UK Audit Methodology and Audit Exemption Manuals, authored their Review Engagement and Academies Specialist Assignment Manuals, developed their New UK GAAP accounts and disclosure checklists and led the launch of Mercia’s International Audit Methodology. David is also an experienced and lively CPD lecturer and can still be found speaking on Mercia’s extensive online recorded CPD course library, live conferences and events.David plays an active role with various committees and working groups at ICAEW and ESFA and is a member of the ICAEW’s Technical and Practical Auditing Committee.
