About Chris Colbert

www.chriscolbert.comAs the son of a Naval officer I grew up living around the world, which caused me to wonder about the world. That led me to innovation. My father was a four-star admiral. That led me to leadership. The combination has resulted in my ability to help organizations realize their full potential by embracing the human truth, challenging legacy thinking, and creating motivating foundations for performance growth. Up until 2005 I ran several companies focused on innovation and technology, including Database Marketing Corporation, one of the first players in that space, BeNow, a data business (sold to Equifax) and Holland-Mark, a full-service agency and innovation-consulting firm. In 2012 I became Chairman Emeritus of Holland-Mark and took a position as SVP, Strategy at Scholastic Corporation in New York to transform its analog business to digital. After a successful turnaround, I left Scholastic in 2014 to dive deeper into the world of innovation. That led me to the Harvard Innovation Labs, where I served as Managing Director until 2019. I left Harvard prompted by invitations to speak to and advise organizations and countries on why and how to embrace change. As of 2024, I became Operating Partner of Digital Fuel Capital, a perfectly contrarian and innovative private equity firm that focuses on DtC e-commerce businesses that want help scaling. We do it by investing not just dollars but best practices thinking, empathy and (com)passion, and hands on resources, really fast. And it works for everyone. I am also an author of This Is It, a somewhat self serving but provocative work on the importance of innovating oneself and Technology is Dead, a subjective examination of where we are as a society vis a vis technology and accountability. I am honored to speak around the world on a range of topics including global innovation, technology stewardship and the human truths that underpin it all. I received a BA from Connecticut College and an International MBA from Duke's Fuqua School of Business.My board work includes School of Humanity, The Securities and Capital Markets Advisory Board of the United Arab Emirates, The Leadership Council of the MGH Cancer Center, The Rose Kennedy Greenway Leadership Council, the MassArt Corporate Advisory Council, the Greater Boston Food Bank, Pillar Ventures, Fintech Americas, and the Boston Public Art Triennial, a non-profit public art organization.     The Harvard Innovation Labs are a robust and cross-disciplinary ecosystem for the entire Harvard community to explore innovation and entrepreneurship while building deeper connections. The i-lab is an educational collaborative for current Harvard students from any Harvard school to explore innovation at any stage. We provide open co-working space, a vibrant community of peer and mentor support, experiential programming, and a 12-week Venture Incubation Program helping teams take their ideas as far as they can go. The i-lab is joined by the Launch Lab, a workspace and curated community for early stage Harvard alumni led ventures and the Life Lab, a curated wet lab community for alumni, faculty and student-led Life Science ventures. As Managing Director my primary task is to work with an amazing team to provide the support, guidance and resources that help both students and alumni ventures evolve their interests in innovation, their ideas and their businesses. I directly oversee all departments while working closely with the leadership team to craft strategies that will allow us to scale the entire Harvard Innovation Labs ecosystem, increasing reach while improving learning impact and venture outcomes.

    My primary task was to work with the president of the Book Clubs division to turn around the performance of the business via strategy, innovation, and day to day management. I led the creation of a turnaround plan that focused on significantly improving the customer experience (teacher, student, parent) by changing the Club context (both online and offline). I was primarily responsible for the overhaul of the brand elements and the e-commerce websites while leading the implementation of the plan. As of today, the Book Clubs division has completely rebounded, with double digit increases in both revenue and profitability.

    From the late 80s to 2001 Holland-Mark was one of the fastest growing, most progressive advertising agencies in New England. I was/am the Mark (middle name). In 2001, due to the dotcom bubble bursting and the terrible tragedy of 9.11, we had to shutter our doors.
