Student Mentor, Cross-Industry Engagement FacilitatorMarquez Technology | Waste-To-Energy Innovations Oct 2018 - PresentJudith is passionate about advancing sustainable aviation fuel uptake and ways in which to protect water quality. She works with a variety of stakeholders to increase the knowledge their role as a stakeholder in protecting it while providing a renewable feedstock for SAF. She is particularly proud of the mentoring of her most recent student at University of California, Irvine (UCI) - go Anteaters! She and this bright 2nd year environmental engineering student met at a student chapter meeting of the Engineers for a Sustainable World in the fall of 2018. They began working together on the grease waste-to-energy project which began under another UCI alum she mentored. The young engineer recognized that proper recovery and use of grease waste-as-a-resource can enable renewable fuels producers to reach net-zero energy goals, leading to more resilient and sustainable communities, and protect air and water quality by reducing pollutants. She assisted in the further development of the project, received funding from the Associated Students of UCI to support the research effort, and educated students on the harmful impacts of improper disposal of fats, oils and grease in the residential areas, and how this "waste" can support the production of renewable energy, fuels, and bioproducts. She also presented this innovative project at the USGBC Municipal Green Building Conference to an audience that included World Energy, a producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.Due to her interest in wastewater and how it can be used in producing renewable energy, she was able to attain a summer internship with the Irvine Ranch Water District in 2019 (a sought-after gig with over 100 applicants!) which was extended through her graduation this year, 2021, and which helped her to garner an offering of a full-time position with them! -

Chair, Ocean Friendly Restaurants ProgramSurfrider Foundation - Newport Beach And Huntington/Seal Beach Chapters 2015 - 2018Newport Bay Watershed, Orange County, Ca And Huntington Beach /Seal BeachRestaurants are a large and very important industry in our communities. I provided OFR program development guidance and insight to several Surfrider chapters, and to its headquarters. Surfrider's Ocean Friendly Restaurants program supports restaurants - and their communities - in providing additional education and best practices to reduce pollution to our environment -- at the source. We're developing collaborative partnerships and providing exposure to green business programs to encourage sustainability within the restaurant industry. As Chair of the Ocean Friendly Restaurants Program for the Newport Beach and Huntington Beach/Seal Beach chapters of Surfrider Foundation, I facilitated collaborative efforts between cities, wastewater agencies, waste management companies, and stormwater and wastewater pollution prevention programs to help restaurants become more ecologically sustainable, and support their communities within the our watersheds in their sustainability efforts. Professional Recommendation:"I have had the pleasure of watching Judith speak to a large group of people on the topic of Ocean Friendly Restaurants as well as attend many water quality meetings in Newport Beach where she is welcome as an expert on this subject. Judith sees the opportunity of acknowledging local restaurants for their good work as a way to motivate them to engage in best management practices to keep plastic food ware and grease out of the storm drains that ultimately drain into the ocean. She is a welcome addition to our chapter and we appreciate her enthusiasm."Darrel FergusonVice Chair, Surfrider FoundationNewport Beach Chapter -
