The Horn Tutor has gone online and international! The Horn Tutor experience offers something wonderful for everyone involved. You, as the parent of your awesome kid, will get an educator with 30 years of experience and a Master’s degree in Music Education who will simplify your life by coming to your home. Your child will have a blast during lessons while finding greater playing success on their instrument - and learning way more about music than just “which buttons to press.” I will be having the time of my life teaching, and watching my student fall in love with making music - ESPECIALLY if they have become frustrated and are having a difficult time. I’m a former middle school band teacher, and I know exactly what a student needs to succeed in the band room. To help accommodate your busy schedule, I will come to your house (!) online, or in person in the Exeter, NH area (once it’s safe for close contact again), to help your beginning or middle level music student succeed on their brass or woodwind instrument during weekly 60-minute lessons, tailored exactly to expanding their strengths and helping them learn new techniques for solving problem areas. Beginners and NeuroAtypical kids are my specialties.HOW can I do this? Well, as a kid, I was one of the worst band students EVER. I made every possible mistake on every instrument I picked up - and I actually quit band after a year! But after jumping back into band during 8th grade, gradually learning how to play each instrument with correct technique through high school and college (Go, UNH ‘Cats!), I figured out how to make, and then fix, almost every possible mistake a young musician could make. Now, as a teacher, I have an enormous bag of tricks to help students fix just about anything they are struggling with - and while the correct way to do things may not be readily apparent, it’s almost always the easier way as well. And I have countless ways to get there.And all of this is packaged up with the experience of teaching, coaching, adjudicating, and conducting 3,000+ students, but with the excitement and joyful energy of a first-year teacher focusing on their one absolute favorite student - yours! (I have never met a single person who loves teaching lessons as much as I do, and my enthusiasm is wildly contagious.)

    Doctors are taught, "if you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras." I am a zebra: a person with a medical condition(s) so under-diagnosed, we often have to educate our own doctors about them. And I help new zebras navigate their new world - most importantly, with the VALIDATION they have been deprived of, and the social and educational support they have been denied. I help people who have been newly diagnosed, or who are beginning the diagnosis process, with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and/or Chiari Malformation. Most new patients have been misdiagnosed and (severely) medically mistreated for decades before they arrive at these correct diagnoses, often by accident. I have no formal medical training, and I do not offer medical advice beyond helping patients find resources. However, I am a very well-educated patient who researched and learned enough to self-diagnose (and then receive confirmations from a highly qualified geneticist and world-renowned neurosurgeon) after a childhood of injuries followed by an agonizing adulthood - including one single 25-year-long headache. I refer these new patients to medically reputable research materials, help them find non-medicinal, additional, effective pain relief techniques to augment a typically complicated medical regimen; help them map out their new team of medical specialists (neurologists, orthopedists, rheumatologists, ENTs, cardiologists, etc.), and advise them on finding a primary care physician who can effectively coordinate the team. I keep in close contact with these people - my dazzle - online, as we come together from all over the world. As my "baby zebras" grow and learn about their condition(s), treatments, and often completely new and unexpected lives, I stay close to them to answer questions, discuss new theories (like the anecdotal possible link to autism that the majority of us are living with), and tell them, as often as I can, the most important words they will ever need to hear:"I believe you."
