Promo Only Canada is the Canadian division of the US-based Promo Only, Inc -- a promotional music subscription service that provides DJs, radio stations, restaurants and bars, retail stores and other music industry professionals with new music and music videos. I started here in the summer after high school. The company was new to Canada, so my first job was making cold calls to DJs across the country, compiling our first customer database. But, I quickly moved into the studio where I took over production of our releases. As we grew, my roll became more that of a manager, eventually leading the programming and production departments. Meanwhile, as technology changed, we saw our business take us from music on CD and video on DVD to developing a proprietary secure digital delivery system. Warner Music Canada signed recording artist, Bell Media (iHeart Radio) syndicated Mixshow DJ, Remixer, Producer.That headline still feels unreal when I read it. I've always had a passion for EDM – long before it even had that moniker, we just called it dance music. The Angry Kids project has represented a manifestation of those dreams for me. We've had an album and an EP of original songs released on a major label, we've had singles signed and released on some of the biggest international dance labels, we've produced remixes, and played for packed clubs. And, we currently have a weekly radio show syndicated on Bell Media (Virgin Radio).

This is a continuation of a project we started at Promo Only in 2002. In 2007, our then software partner, Destiny Media Technologies, took over development of our secure digital delivery platform, 'Promo Only MPE' – re-branding it 'Play MPE'. As I had previously been the Project and Development Manager, they recruited me to continue with that roll. After a year, I left the project and returned to a full-time position as General Manager with Promo Only Canada, where I had still been acting as a part-time consultant.

I got my feet wet in the music industry at Westrax. I was 13 when I started working as an Assistant DJ – hauling speakers, taking requests, staying out way too late on a school night. As soon as I got my driver's license at 16, I was out playing my own gigs. We played school dances, corporate events, weddings, and some big concert gigs... at 18, I got to open for Chris Sheppard and Love Inc. Young Jeff was swooning. While those experiences seem specific, working as a young DJ taught me several broader life skills – confidence in public speaking, ability to read a room, and the importance of a good first impression.
