Live-In Assistant/House Coordinator
Overland Park, Ks
As an assistant, I live full-time in the home with 3-4 core members [adults with intellectual disabilties] and 1-2 assistants [community members without disabilities]. As a live-in assistant I:Maintain the house, cook meals, provide transportation, administer medications, assist with daily hygiene, attend meetings and assessments, plan anniversary and birthday celebrations for the entire community, accompany to doctor visits, maintain financial ledgers for the house and core members, and help plan and achieve goals.Sing songs, laugh, have napkin fights, participate in dance parties, bake cookies, give hugs, receive hugs, grow in love.During my time as a live-in assistant, I have lived in 3 of our 5 homes. I was also the founding assistant of Mercy House, which we opened in 2012, where we moved two core members from one of our other homes and welcomed a new core member who is Deaf. As a founding assistant, I was responsible for supporting the core members as they adjusted, establishing routines and traditions, and helping them have the highest quality of life possible. I also took the initiative to seek out and apply for a course in American Sign Language at the local community college so that I could more effectively communicate with everyone in the home.
