Barney Trucking started in 1947 with one truck and a dream. 70 years later, they load a truck every three minutes, seven days a week, three hundred and sixty-five days a year with the help of over 550 outstanding employees.To help address the company’s accelerated growth, I was hired to facilitate the recruitment and interview process, through sourcing internal and external candidates throughout their recruiting pipeline.Attracting the best candidates started with writing accurate and descriptive job postings, and continuously updating job descriptions. My goal was to make the process as easy as possible for both the hiring manager and the candidate, and I learned to quickly identify the skills that make our employees successful.As I conducted phone interviews and scheduled candidates for onsite interviews, I found that open communication was vital to ensuring an efficient hiring process and a good candidate fit.It was in this position that I met my mentor; I’m grateful for all that I learned in a short period of time.Through my personal network, I was approached with a recruiting opportunity at MasterControl. Although I enjoyed my work at Barney Trucking, I couldn’t pass up the career growth potential of this offer.

With over 75 years in the food distribution service, Nicholas & Company delivers exceptional products and services throughout the Intermountain West.Although I was originally hired in the shipping & receiving department, my skills in finding solutions for people-related issues led me to quickly advance to HR support for the SLC transportation and warehouse departments.It was here where I discovered my talent for recruiting, and aligning the goals of my company and candidates.I was called upon by various managers to schedule meetings and interviews to screen prospective team members. I maintained a solid recruitment and interview process, including following up with candidates.Participating in the full life-cycle recruitment of candidates, I assisted with new employee background checks and I-9 verification, and created and maintained team member records in our HRIS system.My HR duties also included assisting current staff: I worked to answer general employee requests and questions related to HR, and contributed to the execution of exciting team member events.I learned much through assisting Training and Development leaders in producing department training efforts to encourage the career growth of team members.

I enlisted as a private, but quickly moved up the ranks to take on more responsibility as a Sergeant. It was my duty to establish and maintain stock records and other documents such as inventory, material control, accounting and supply reports. I reviewed and verified quantities received against bills of contracts, purchase requests and shipping documents.I sharpened my problem-solving skills and attention to detail as I worked to raise the quality and accuracy of performance, cost and parts data, through improved maintenance management.However, the biggest accomplishment of my military career came as I was considered for promotion. To achieve this, I had to overcome my fear of jumping out of a plane. I accepted the challenge.Becoming a paratrooper at Airborne School required me to dig deep to face my fears, and develop a willingness to be challenged mentally and physically. This three-week course, also known as Basic Airborne Course, taught me techniques involved in parachuting from airplanes and landing safely. In the end, only 300 soldiers remained out of the 800 that started the course. I’m proud to say I was part of that group, and have made a total of 18 non-assisted jumps in my career.
