I took up the challenge of integrating ESG and sustainability into the ever-evolving equity research process when it became obvious to me that fund managers would have to embrace sustainability and ESG metrics to drive positive investment outcomes for our clients.This drives my commitment to integrate ESG metrics into a proven systematic approach to investing. On my journey to becoming the lead on the ESG efforts of STANLIB’s equity team, I have initiated and created many of the company’s ESG guardrails. They include:- Cowriting the ESG policies on remuneration, proxy voting, and engagement- Developing proprietary governance scorecards and comprehensive ESG ratings- Developing ESG Sustainability Materiality Maps that form the basis for active engagement at board level - Sitting on the STANLIB ESG Committee- Refining the proxy voting guidelines and rules, and creating a remuneration policy scorecard for objectively assessing how STANLIB should vote on remuneration resolutions at AGMs - Accumulating learnings and data to create a valuable platform to better integrate ESG into equity investment decision-making and portfolio construction
