Theodore Hoerr is the founder of Terrain Work, a New York City based landscape architecture and urban design firm. His professional and academic work considers how landscape's innate ability to change creates new emergent forms and experiences, synthesizing culture, nature, and the built environment. Theodore has led the design of a diverse range of projects in five continents from large-scale urban strategies that reshape the future of cities to small-scale landscapes that emphasize the craft of building. Theodore received his Master of Urban Design (MLAUD) with distinction and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA II) from Harvard University. He currently teaches in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design.Previous to founding Terrain Work Theodore worked in several leading international design practices. He was most recently a Principal at Balmori Associates in New York City where he led the design and management of projects like a winning proposal for MoMA PS1’s Rockaway Call for Ideas in Queens, New York, mixed-used large scale urban projects in Bogota, Colombia, and Sao Paulo, Brazil, and an award-winning master plan for the University of Iowa Art Campus in Iowa City, Iowa. Prior to Balmori Theodore was a Senior Associate at EDAW/AECOM in Sydney, Australia and Denver, Colorado, and a Designer at Richard Haag Associates in Seattle, Washington.
