I am first and foremost a problem-solver. To develop my problem-solving aptitude, I structured my academic path to hone my experience to have applicable computer science skills while having a strong theoretical foundation from a math background. When I graduate in 2021, I will have a degree in mathematics and an additional major in computer science.As a math and computer science double major, I believe it is important to have valuable skills for the technology industry supported by understanding the mathematical concepts behind these applications to be able to solve novel problems in creative ways. I learned the various ways computer science is used in the industry, from algorithms to computer architecture to machine learning while gaining valuable industry experience through an internship at an A.I. company where collaborating with other interns using Git made me more familiar with real-life software development. In addition, my research experience on the Nonnegative Matrix Factorization problem made me more familiar with problem-solving on the abstract side of mathematics and how applications and theoretical research both provide new methods to each other.I am always eager to learn about new opportunities and pick up new skills. I am proficient in C, Java, Python, MATLAB, and Standard ML among other languages, and my background allows me to easily learn new skills.

I collaborated with other interns using Java to contribute to building frameworks and interface. I gained real-industry experience with software development through using Git to maintain a repository and bringing together the individual parts coded by other interns. As part of the internship program, I attended the Simon Initiative LearnLab Summer School. During the program, I wrote Python code to test various policies on the apprenticeship learning model with a team. We worked with apprenticeship learning modeling how a student would learn on basic arithmetic concepts. We modified the software to test different update policies on more advanced arithmetic and presented our results to other participants at the end of the program. -

While randomized methods for Nonnegative Matrix Factorization exists, we pursued to find deterministic solutions that produce results as or more accurate than the current random methods. I learned of its applications in data mining and machine learning as well as how math research is conducted in the present-day using modern methods. My responsibilities included writing MATLAB code to develop and test the accuracy of potential new algorithms.
