•Conducted performance analysis by analyzed the thermal efficiency of 5th heat exchanger at PPSDM MIGAS oil refinery with fouling factor approach.•By the result of the analysis, the thermal efficiency is 87% with relativity dirt factor in 0.0481, higher than the allowable relativity dirt factor for heavy crude oil heat exchanger which is 0.005.•Proposed advice to the company by postpone the maintenance of the 5th heat exchanger in order to save 200$-300$ worth of company finances
