Founded and ran a highly successful internal incubator called "Trimble Spime" to drive the adoption of emerging smartphone technology, modern web frameworks, and open source across Trimble's various lines of business.With a small team based primarily in India, we were able to navigate complex social dynamics to collaborate and rapidly inspire and enable new disruptive solutions within existing lines of business. Founder and head of Engineering at Trimble Outdoors, a disruptive internal startup whose mission was to democratize fitness and the great outdoors by making them available to everyone through the cellphones and web browsers they already have.* Built one of the very first consumer applications using GPS in a cellphone. First in the Motorola / Nextel ecosystem on J2ME, then scaling the team to quickly onboard additional platforms as they became available (Sprint via J2ME, Verizon via BREW, Blackberry via J2ME, iPhone first via WebOS, then later ObjectiveC, Android)* Built a web-based map editor through an early Google Maps “Smashup“, to allow users to pre-plan their routes, and publish their trips and workouts online.* Created a social network community that allowed for * Whitelabeled web and mobile experiences for Backpacker Magazine, Runners World, and Cabela’s Outdoor Retailer.* Created custom background maps and overlaps to bring in topographic maps, hunting maps, lake contour maps, forest roads, etc, leveraging MapServer and exposing the maps to all web and mobile applications.* Created service to provide a base layer of hiking trails to Google Earth through a periodic ETL that fed KML to Google.Cross Company Collaboration:* Spun up Trimble’s first formal UX function, and drove the formal practices of UX and user-centered design to other lines of business through Trimble’s Engineering Council* Worked with an Executive Sponsor to drive the justification for and formation of an internal team to support developer collaboration tools, to allow collaboration and sharing across product teams. [Startup: "GridData", Acquired by Trimble in 2001] - Developed one of the world's first entirely web-based SaaS mapping and location-sharing platforms to enable fleet managers to manage, track, and optimize their vehicles to dramatically increase transparency, efficiency, and safety while minimizing liability, delays, and costs.* Developed web-based interactive mapping and work order management applications that could run out of the web browser (taken for granted today, this was a novel concept in 1999) * Consumed all functionality through documented APIs that posted XML over HTTP, which were also managed as "Products" themselves so other third-party developers could create value for our customers through integration with their offerings (also a novel concept at the time). * Experimented with Motorola/Nextel's first Cellular Location Based Services to leverage GPS in cell phones as a user agent for mapping and location sharing in 2001.
