Understanding that material selection in architectural design is a climate, health and equity issue, this research fellowship pursues how adoption of best practices can be facilitated and advocacy for change can be inspired across industry scales. Fellows are expected to investigate published academic and industry research and initiatives, select a focus area for original research and action, and plug into ongoing firm projects while challenging them to go further than they might otherwise go. Most importantly, Fellows are expected to give back to the profession by sharing their work within the firm, within the community, and through conferences or publications.

Led by Professor Athina Papadopoulou, this graduate research project builds upon her novel material innovations in the design of haptic wearable devices for emotional regulation, with particular consideration for the neurodiverse experience. This research seeks to expand the design and applications of this material for greater health impacts.

Tasks included: Architectural drafting via AutoCAD, detail drawing, site visits, developing presentations for clients, and preparing document submissions for city boards.

Each year, 5-6 residents are selected on a competitive basis for the Steven Myron Holl Foundation / ‘T’ Space Summer Architectural Residency in Rhinebeck, New York.The 25-day intensive studio challenges participants to think and design critically. Residents enjoy theoretical and experimental freedom as they design a site-specific project unique to their program. Using both analog and digital media tools, the program includes design critiques, pin-ups, lectures and conversations with invited professionals, as well as field trips to Hudson Valley destinations of acclaimed architectural and artistic interest.

Tasks included: Revit modeling work for JFK Redevelopment, schedule development, program diagramming, team coordination, design and Rhino modeling for LaGuardia Airport bicycle and pedestrian routes.

Led by Professor Anthony Titus, this undergraduate research project studied the potential intersections and opportunities between painting and architecture. Through this specialized time of research and design, I developed a collection of drawings that analyzed how the act of painting as a temporal system of layering can influence the notion of architectural space evolution through movement and lamination.
